The BJP, which is seeking a second straight term under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Maharashtra, is contesting 164 seats, which include candidates of smaller allies contesting on its lotus symbol, while Sena has fielded candidates on 126 seats.

On the other hand, the Congress has fielded 147 candidates and the ally NCP 121.

Among other parties, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has fielded 101 candidates, the CPI 16, the CPM 8. The BSP has fielded candidates in 262 constituencies. A total of 1400 Independents are also in the poll arena.

The opposition campaign was, however, lacklustre as both the Congress and the NCP were plagued by infighting and desertions in the run-up to the polls.

Election Schedule for Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand may be announced soon.

The election schedule of Maharashtra and Haryana is likely to be announced in the next few days. Top sources in the Election Commission (EC) said that the announcement could begin in the next two to three days.

Elections for the three-state assemblies Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand are due before the end of the year. Notification of Haryana and Maharashtra elections will come first. The Jharkhand Legislative Assembly will go to elections later and may be involved in several phases due to the threat of Left-Wing Extremism and deployment of forces.

Sources said that the entire process of voting and counting in Maharashtra and Haryana may be done before Diwali.

The final round of review for the elections to the two-state assemblies of the BJP-ruled states is underway. The EC has held several rounds of meetings with state institutions and home ministry officials on security assessment and deployment of paramilitary forces during elections.

EC teams recently took a review visit to Maharashtra for evaluation. Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa visited Haryana about 10 days ago. In both states, the Special Summary Poll Amendment exercise is completed. The Election Commission in July directed the chief secretaries and chief executive officers of both states. The Election Commission is to finalize the list of officials of both the states, which may be directly associated with election duties.

by-election, also spelled bye-election (Ireland only) (known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, and a bypoll in India), is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections.

In most cases, these elections occur after the incumbent dies or resigns, but they also occur when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, ennoblement, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance). Less commonly, these elections have been called when a constituency election is invalidated by voting irregularities.

Result updates for by-elections 2019

Voting for Bye-elections results was held on 21 October. The elections results will be released on Thursday 24 October.

BJP gives six months to its MPs to improve performance

BJP gives six months to its MPs to improve performance

The highest number of 19 MPs with low-performance reports are from UP, followed by Raj, Bihar, MP, Gujarat and Karnataka.

NEW DELHI: The BJP has identified around 90 to 100 Lok Sabha MPs, including over a dozen ministers, whose performance in their constituencies has been faulted by party workers.

Their list was drawn up in a 5-day meeting of BJP on the basis of the reports submitted by the party’s organising general secretaries from the states.

These MPs have been asked to improve their performance in their respective constituencies in the next six months before the party starts finalising the candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, party sources said.

They said the highest number of 19 MPs with low-performance reports are from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka, as their popularity among people has sunk for doing negligible work.

In fact, the performance of each of the party’s 273 MPs was assessed in the meeting held in Surajkund holiday resort last week. This was on the basis of the feedback from the BJP organising general secretaries, who are all borrowed from the RSS.

The party will gather more information about the MPs through NaMo APP and at least two surveys by private agencies before it gets down in January to finalise the list of candidates. Since the exercise is planned for January, it rules out the possibility of Prime Minister Modi advancing the Lok Sabha elections to hold them simultaneously with the Assembly elections.
