Six municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad will go to polls on November 22 and counting for these will be held on November 26. Voting for municipalities, zilla panchayat and gram panchayats will be held on November 29 and counting will take place on December 2.
The announcement comes two days after the Gujarat High Court ordered the SEC to conduct the local body polls before the expiry of their terms after quashing an ordinance issued by the state government to pave way to delay local bodies polls.
"In the first phase, elections to six municipal corporations-- Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surat and Vadodara-- will be held on November 22," State Election Commissioner Varesh Sinha said at a press conference here today.
On November 29, the second phase, polling will be held for 31 district panchayats, 230 taluka panchayats and 56 municipalities, he added.
"With the announcement of the dates, the model code of conduct has come into effect from today itself," he said.
On Wednesday, the high court had quashed the ordinance issued by the Gujarat government to delay local body polls citing law and order situation due to the Patel quota stir. The HC had termed the government's move as "unconstitutional".
The voting will take place between 8 am and 5pm on both the days. While, the counting of votes as well as result declaration for six municipal corporations will be done on November 26, the results of other local bodies will be declared on December 2, Sinha said.
"In all, elections will be conducted on 323 local bodies during these two phases across Gujarat. All these local bodies have 6,433 wards, while total seats are 8,434. There are total 3.55 crore registered voters for these elections," said SEC secretary Mahesh Joshi.
