State Election Commission has directed all the district collectorates to form separate election cells in the wake of the elections of 10 municipal corporations, 195 municipal councils, 26 zilla parishads and 297 panchayat samities between December 2016 and March 2017.
Major municipal corporations — such as the ones in Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Nagpur, Amrawati, Akola and Solapur — would go for elections in 2016 and 2017.

NCP new chief of the Mumbai unit Sachin Ahir, who took over as the new chief of the Mumbai unit said that his party would not ally with the Congress in the corporation elections.“We will work together to target the government on issues of corruption, but we will be contesting the elections on our own,” said Mr. Ahir.

4-July-15: Civic poll candidate can now file papers online in Maharashtra
State Election Commission of Maharashtra (SECM) has decided to allow the candidates in civic elections to file nomination papers online with the help of a special software uploaded on the commission's website.
"Through this software, the candidates can fill forms online and make corrections, if any, and after they are fully satisfied they can take a print-out and submit it to the returning officer," state election commissioner J S Saharia today said here.
20 June 15: Divisional chief asked to announce mayoral poll
The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has initiated the process to elect the next city mayor after the state government disqualified Trupti Malavi from the post.
The authority to initiate the process to elect the new mayor is with the civic administration. The department of town secretary on Friday wrote a letter to divisional commissioner S Chokalingam to announce the programme to elect the new mayor. Once the letter is acknowledged, the divisional commissioner can announce the date for calling the general body meeting within 15 days.

13-June-15: Campaigning for Vasai-Virar civic poll ends in Mumbai
The campaigning for the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) polls ended on Friday evening. The fate of the candidates will be sealed on Sunday when voters cast their franchise.
Political leaders made a beeline to the region wooing voters before campaigning ended at 5pm. Addressing the issue of water shortage and bringing developmental projects in the region were the promises made by the political parties. A total of 371 candidates are vying for the 115 seats. Four of the seats have already been taken by the ruling Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) as it was unopposed.
The party that reaches the magic figure of 58 will rule the civic house. While the BVA claims to touch over 100 seats, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance too has gone all out to ensure that they cross the 58 plus mark. The Sena was trying to get party president Uddhav Thackeray to campaign in the area but he could not make it. Other Sena leaders like Subhash Desai and environment minister Ramdas Kadam spoke at public meetings and promised development projects in the region on the lines of Mumbai.
There are 7,11,294 voters and 627 polling stations for the election. The results will be announced on June 16.
9-Jun-15: Sena averse to poll pact with BJP
The love-hate relationship between Shiv Sena and BJP continues as the city top brass of Sena have expressed their unwillingness to continue with the alliance for civic elections scheduled in February 2017.
Sena leaders recently held a meeting with party workers where prominent leaders including party's Pune liaison chief Amol Kolhe insisted that Sena must win 100 seats on its own and claim single-handed power in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
4-Jun-15: 379 candidates for Vasai-Virar civic polls
Mumbai: A total of 379 candidates will contest the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) election to be held on June 14. Of the 115 seats that goes to the polls, four seats are unopposed. Three of these seats belong to the ruling Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) and one seat has gone to the Republican Party of India (RPI-A).
While the BVA will contest all the seats, the Congress, NCP and BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has not managed to contest all the seats.

4-Jun-15: Eye on 2017 civic polls, NCP prepares its report card for PMC
Ahead of the 2017 civic polls, the NCP, which controls the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), plans to release a report card of its performance in the civic body for the last three years that it has ruled it.
“We would soon release a report card of our performance in the PMC. It is in the final stages of completion,” city NCP chief and Rajya Sabha MP Vandana Chavan said.
According to Chavan, the party has appointed a professional agency to prepare the report card. “The same agency that prepared our manifesto would be making the report card for us. They are aware of the promises made by us during the previous civic polls and so they would be able to prepare the report card accordingly,” she said.
30-May-15: Congress-NCP come together to fight Vasai-Virar civic polls
After the BJP-Shiv Sena, the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have decided to form an alliance for the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) polls.
The Congress-NCP alliance broke ahead of the 2014 Maharashtra assembly polls when both the parties decided to go alone. In the VVMC poll to be held on June 14, the Congress and NCP will contest together. While the Congress will contest 58 seats, the NCP will field candidates from 15 wards. The election is being held for all the 115 wards.

After much speculation on whether they will come together, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (SS) have decided to form an alliance for the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) polls. The VVMC will go to polls for 115 seats on June 14. With the ruling Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) led by Vasai MLA Hitendra Thakur, having extended support to the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis government, speculation was rife that the BJP may stay away from forming an alliance with the Sena in the VVMC polls.
26-May-15: Voters' list for Vasai-Virar civic polls released
The final voters' list for the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) polls has been published after making several corrections.
The VVMC election will be held on June 14. The electoral list was first published on May 21. The list contained several errors and omissions in names, addresses and sex of voters. Both political parties and the public raised objections to the list. The objections were accepted by the civic administration till Saturday. The errors were rectified till late Sunday. The list was published on Monday.
22-May-15: Congress to go solo in Vasai-Virar civic polls
The Congress will go solo in the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) election and has welcomed smaller parties to join them.
Maharashtra Congress President Ashok Chavan on Tuesday met party leaders and activists at Vasai to discuss the election slated to be held on June 14.Chavan while addressing party workers said that while they have suitable candidates for around 75 of the 115 seats, they are looking at contested all the seats.
20-May-15: Over 4,500 objections over Vasai-Virar ward demarcation
The VVMC election will be held on June 14 and the municipality has to release the list of voters by May 21. The ward demarcation was done in April in which the wards increased from 89 in 2010 to 115 in 2015. It was done based on the 2011 census which puts the population of the Vasai-Virar region at over 12.34 lakhs.
