Lok Sabha Elections 2014: Opponents plan to slice up Narendra Modi's Varanasi pie

Lok Sabha Elections 2014: Opponents plan to slice up Narendra Modi's Varanasi pie
loksabhavaranasiNarendra Modi seems to be the opponent favorite this season

Far from the high-decibel campaigning and 24x7 politicking that are setting the stage for the most interesting contest of the 2014 Lok Sabha election, there are pointers in this temple town that BJP challenger Narendra Modi might not have a cakewalk in the high-profile constituency.

Readying for a "close finish" contest here, the opposition parties are discreetly working on a plan to upstage the Gujarat chief minister. And so, while many missed the fine print behind the sudden withdrawal of Quami Ekta Dal candidate Mukhtar Ansari from the fray last week, there are clear indications of the behind-the-curtains "hulchal" that is pointing at a tacit understanding between political groups to consolidate the opposition votes against Modi. Mukhtar, a 'mafia don' who turned legislator who gave BJP's incumbent MP Murli Manohar Joshi a run for his money in the 2009 poll, is quietly trying through his brother Afzal to "chart a consensus among candidates opposed to Modi to avoid splitting of the 350,000 Muslim votes".

A snapshot of India's economic recovery based on who wins LS polls

A snapshot of India's economic recovery based on who wins LS polls,Lok sabha elections 2014, Lok Sabha 2014

indiaeconomy2014As India goes to polls, brokerage Nomura has predicted four likely outcomes and decoded what each political outcome means for India's economy.

The brokerage's ideal political outcome is that BJP/NDA form a solid plurality from which it should have little difficulty negotiating a viable coalition. In this event, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, would be able to appoint a cabinet largely consistent with pursuing reforms, cutting red tape and boosting infrastructure investment.

The second outcome is that the NDA wins 200-219 seats to build a majority-wide coalition. This means more parties would have to be involved and hence more trade-offs are likely over policy as well as cabinet seats.(Complete 5th phase of lok sabha poll )

High polling on most seats on April 17 is comforting for Narendra Modi-led BJP,Lok sabha elections 2014

High polling on most seats on April 17 is comforting for Narendra Modi-led BJP,Lok sabha elections 2014

modisketchecThey were calling it Super Thursday — the 800-pound gorilla round of the nine-phase 16th Lok Sabha election. With 121 seats, some of them in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where the two national parties/alliances are locked in head-to-head contests, this round had the potential to irreversibly define the direction of the election.
For Narendra Modi's party, the 121 seats held hope not just because it sought to make big gains at the cost of the Congress in Maharashtra and Rajasthan, as well as recover ground in Karnataka, where it was defeated in the 2011 assembly election. For the BJP, this round also tested the Modi wave in the East Bloc: Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and pockets of north Bengal. That is why a high turnout, a rough but not always indicator of a mood against the party ruling in New Delhi, was deemed essential.Complete 5th phase of lok sabha poll )
