Andhra Pradesh Bye Election

A by-election (also spelled as "bye-election"), also known as a special election, is an election held to fill a political office that has become vacant between general elections. Usually, a by-election occurs when the incumbent has died or resigned. It may also occur when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office, for example because of a recall, ennoblement, a serious criminal conviction, failure to maintain a minimum attendance, bankruptcy or mental incapacity. GHMC Civic polls: Candidates can contest elections from only one ward and not more, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, municipal administration and urban development (MAUD), K Surendra Mohan, Hyderabad

Candidates contesting elections to the urban local body polls such as municipal corporations and municipal councils in the state will be barred from contesting from more than one ward from August 9.

The department of municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) has made relevant amendments to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2016, (Act No.5 of 2016) which will come into force from Tuesday.

As per the amended Act, a candidate may file nominations from more than one ward in a municipal corporation but has to withdraw nominations from all other wards except one  of his or her choice before the deadline for withdrawal of nominations, failing which, all his/her nominations would become invalid and he/she would not be allowed to contest from any ward.

A notification to this effect will be published in the extraordinary issue of the Telangana Gazette on Tuesday. The state government made amendments to the GHMC Act after the Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) had written to it asking it to make necessary amendments to the GHMC Act.

GHMC additional commissioner (elections) K Surendra Mohan told Express that candidates in urban local body polls would be allowed to contest elections from only one ward and not more.

Surendra Mohan said that till now candidates, who get elected from two wards in the same poll, had the choice to retain one ward and relinquish the other. “This is leading to compulsory bypoll as the seat becomes vacant after resignation. This will change now,” he added. Conducting a bypoll is time-consuming and requires huge expenditure.

AP municipal corporation elections unlikely this year, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC),Andhra Pradesh Civic elections schedule/dates 2016, Andhra Pradesh local body elections latest Updates Notification

Elections to the municipal corporations of Kakinada, Guntur, Kurnool, Ongole and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh are unlikely to be held this year.

The polls were originally scheduled to be held in March 2014, but the government kept it pending due to various reasons, including court cases. Now, even as the government had decided to hold the elections to these civic bodies along with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) in September-October, it could not complete the revision of the voters' lists and survey of BC voters.

AP Municipal Corporation Election 2017 Details

Indications are that the elections will be held early next year. Consequently, the AP government on Tuesday issued orders extending the term of the special officers of these municipal corporations till December 31. The government also extended the term of special officers of Kandukur and Rajampet civic bodies.

Once the voters' lists are revised and municipal wards reserved, the government will approach the AP State Election Commission to hold the polls. The process is likely to go on till December.

Andhra Pradesh civic polls: Several controversies cropped up between the parties, telugu desam, AP BJP, civic polls, Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada

Vijayawada: The elections for various corporations and municipalities across the state may lead to another controversy between the TD and BJP as the latter has plans to contest for the mayor post in many places, even as it has an election alliance with the ruling Telugu Desam.

The leaders of BJP have openly raised the issue for debate in Guntur and Vizag cities. The TD and BJP are continuing their election alliance but several controversies cropped up between the parties. Politicial experts even expressed doubts if the alliance would continue for long.

In such a situation, the adamant attitude of the BJP leaders with regard to contesting the civic polls is likely to trigger opposition from the Telugu Desam.

Former minister Kanna Laxminarayana made an announcement that the BJP would contest the forthcoming elections in Guntur Corporation. Similarly, the BJP leaders had already evinced interest in contesting elections in Vizag city too.

The election schedule for several corporations and various municipalities is yet to be announced but the leaders of BJP are already chalking out plans to contest. The TD is also very keen to have hold in cities like Guntur and Vizag.

What BJP's Plan?

Recently, minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, hinting at the BJP’s plans to contest, assured the TD cadre that the party would contest in all the major municipalities and corporations.

However, the BJP is keen on contesting in Vizag as it had won the civic elections there and hopes to repeat the feat again.

Congress eyes on GVMC polls in 12 local bodies

In a hope to revive its dwindling fortunes, the  Congress is looking at the upcoming polls to 6 municipal corporations and 6 municipalities in the state, especially the GVMC to  strengthen its base in the state.

Congress is facing its worst ever crisis in the state with not even a single MLA representing in the state Assembly after the party faced the public wrath for the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 polls.

To launch a nationwide stir against dilution of forest rights, Rahul Gandhi chose Andhra Pradesh. He will launch the stir on  August 6 at Chintapalli in Vizag Agency and also interact with the tribals of 45 villages that are going to be affected by the proposed bauxite mining.

Notably, it is decided that candidates for the GVMC polls and for other municipalities will be selected by the state leadership and there will be no ‘Delhi’ interference. Party also decided to field new and young faces in these polls.
