HYDERABAD: The High Court on Friday took on record the statement made by the Election Commission of India that there was no en masse deletion of voters’ names from electoral rolls by the commission after October and that there would not be any such deletions, except on individual applications, till completion of the elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
Justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy disposed of two writ petitions filed separately by Feroze Khan of TDP and Nagesh Mudiraj of Congress who contended that the process of reservation for the BC category was done without finalising the issue of deletion of 6.39 lakh voters from rolls.
On an earlier occasion, the commission had submitted to the court its final decision upholding the removal of 6.39 lakh voters. The petitioners then complained that the GHMC had prepared a list of another 7.9 lakh voters to be deleted on the pretext of double entry, etc and they were being clandestinely removed and that the composition of voters would change after the deletions. The judge then asked the ECI to explain this aspect too.
When the matter came up for hearing on Friday, the counsel for the Election Commission of India said that it was true that 7.9 lakh of voters were identified for deletion as they were found to be duplicate. For now, the commission decided not to delete these voters from the electoral rolls till completion of local body polls (GHMC). In fact, there would be no further such en masse deletion of voters, he added.
Justice Nagarjuna Reddy decided to close the petitions after recording the statements made by the State Election Commission and the Election Commission of India that further process would be on the basis of voters as on October 5, i.e. after the deletion for 6.39 lakh voters.
