Congress forms Mangaldai Municipal Board

MANGALDAI– Pratap Bordoloi, newly-elected commissioner of Ward No. 10 of the ruling Congress was on Saturday sworn in as the 19th chairman of the Mangaldai Municipal Board which was formed way back in 1957.

Jinkul Ali who was elected as an independent candidate from Ward No. 8 was sworn in as the 17th vice-chairman of the board. Independent candidate Jinkul Ali had played a crucial role while extending his support to the Congress to form the new board after the ruling party of the State failed to achieve absolute majority in the last civic poll.

In the ten-member board, the Congress won five wards while BJP captured three followed by two wards won by independent candidates.

Meanwhile, along with the chairman and vice-chairman, all the newly-elected ward commissioners took their oath in a function held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall where unlike on previous occasions, media was not invited for reasons best known to the district administration.

Assam polls before May 2016: Chief Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma

Guwahati, (IANS) Elections to the Assam legislative assembly will be held before May 2016, Chief Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma said here on Tuesday.

The entire 1.9 crore electorate in Assam will have voters' identity cards by July this year, he said. At present, only 95 percent of the total electorate have identity cards.

"We have already started preparations for next year's election. It will be held before May 2016. We have already started the process of purification of voters' list in Assam," Brahma told newsmen in Guwahati.

He said the Election Commission has started a National Voters' Service Portal, a first of its kind initiative in the world, wherein a voter can find his or her name, address, polling station etc. online and can rectify the same from any part of the world.

He said the poll panel has also started a novel project to link up Aadhaar data with the photo identity cards to ensure that there was no duplication in the electoral rolls. "Besides, this will also help track migration of people," he said.

"The online system also helps in identifying the number of Indian citizens who haven't registered themselves with the Election Commission," he said.

The Election Commission will hold scrutiny of nominations on March 28 and the final list of candidates will be published on the same day.
Over 20.64 lakh people are eligible to vote in the four BTAD districts -- Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri. There are 10,58,889 male voters and 10,05,210 female voters. Voting will be held in 2,778 polling stations.

The election will be held in the four Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri and is expected to be a fierce one as two big national parties — Congress and BJP — will fight the election against the ruling BPF.

This is the third election to the council. The Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which was formed out of the disbanded Bodo Liberation Tiger in 2003, has been in power since its inception. According to the final electoral rolls, voters in the BTAD areas have increased to 20,64,099 from 18,64,057 in 2010.

Assam BJP leader quits, blames Modi-Shah, corruption

Guwahati, (IANS) A senior leader of the BJP's Assam unit and national executive member has quit the party, blaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party president Amit Shah and several other reasons for his "disillusionment".

"My departure from the BJP is not a knee-jerk reaction to any specific event, but a gradual disillusionment, a loss of faith with the general drift of the party at both the national and state levels," said Bora in a letter addressed to media.

"It was very difficult for me to compose a resignation letter and cite specific causes. What I have tried to do instead is consolidate my thoughts around 5 specific themes: 1) Assam features fairly low on the priority of the national leadership. 2) Subversion of the democratic tradition by the Modi-Shah duo. 3) Political corruption in Assam BJP. 4) BJP's dalliances with the most corrupt Himanta Biswa Sarma. 5) State president Siddhartha Bhattacharya's actions and utterances," Bora said in his letter which was available on his Facebook page.

Bora, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2011 state assembly polls from Jalukbari constituency, had earlier been vocal against the state BJP leadership over the later's alleged attempt bring in Congress leader and former health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to the BJP.

A product of IIM, Ahmedabad, Bora joined politics by joining BJP's National Media Cell, the party's in-house communication and PR unit.

In 2007, he was elevated and appointed the national convenor of BJP's Information Technology (IT) Cell. The IT Cell was BJP's newest organisational unit, and Bora was its first head.

In November 2008, Prodyut was selected to run the communications office of BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the 2009 general elections L.K. Advani.

"I am still a great advocate of change from within. For many years, I hoped against hope (and experience) that change would take place in Assam BJP. And that it would emerge as the only real alternative to the misrule of the Congress. Today, I am not so sure anymore," Bora mentioned in his letter.

"I want to keep alive my idealism in the goodness of people, and hope of better days to come. Politics has an immense capacity to corrode that human spirit and turn one into a cynic. I have decided to depart from the BJP before my spirit gets damaged a bit too much," he added.
