Congress created hostility between Telangana and Seemandhra: Modi. |
Hyderabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday tried to do a balancing act on the issue of division of Andhra Pradesh saying that both Telangana and Seemandhra are equally important for BJP. Though Andhra Pradesh had contributed the highest number of MPs for Congress to come to power at the Centre, Congress ended up creating only hostile atmosphere between the two regions of the state, he said. Modi was addressing a massive public meeting here, his first campaign rally since his anointment as BJP's poll campaign committee chief. He recalled how NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee created three new states of Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Chattisgarh without any hostilities in any region. The chief minister wondered why a new capital city has not been built for Seemandhra since 2004 when Congress came to power. He said BJP favoured development and growth of cities in Seemandhra even better than Hyderabad. Observing that Telugu-speaking people lived in perfect harmony in Gujarat cities like Surat and Ahmedabad, he questioned why Seemahdhra and Telangana cannot live in peace and without animosity towards each other. The Congress' decision to carve out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh has sparked protests in the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseems regions with proponents of united Andhra Pradesh have been holding strident protests to oppose creation of the separate state. Modi concluded his speech saying 'Jai Telangana' and 'Jai Seemandhra'. Speaking on the occasion, senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu alleged that corruption, price rise, poverty grew by leaps and bounds in the country during Congress rule. "With Congress' popularity on the wane and other major parties like Left and Janata Dal reduced to splinters, it is only BJP that can offer good governance to people and deal with an iron hand against evils like terrorism and communalism," he said. Showering praise on Modi, he said the Gujarat chief minister had emerged as a personification of dynamism, decisiveness and development and his rising popularity is giving sleepless nights to BJP's rivals. At the public meeting, Modi took blessings from two senior citizens - a freedom fighter and a woman - who made it a point to attend the rally though the event was mainly meant for youth. The two senior citizens were invited to the stage where Modi touched their feet. Indrasena Reddy, the freedom fighter, insisted on attending the meeting despite his old age and physical condition, state BJP president G Kishan Reddy said. Reddy recalled how the decision of the state BJP unit to collect a voluntary contribution of five rupees from those who wanted to attend the rally had triggered a huge debate. He said other major parties in the state spent money to mobilise crowds for their events, but BJP has set a new trend by collecting the contribution meant for Uttarakhand relief. The contribution amount of Rs 10 lakh was handed over by the state unit to the party's national level functionary Satishji on the occasion. source:http://ibnlive.in.com/news |

Illegal immigration behind Assam violence: LK Advani , Debate on Assam violence, LK Advani, Sonia Gandhi speak out |
09 Aug : New Delhi: Senior BJP leader LK Advani on Tuesday said that the root cause of the violence in Assam was illegal immigration from Bangladesh and exhorted the Centre to take a strong view of the problem.
"The root cause of the violence in Assam is illegal immigration from Bangladesh. The Supreme Court too has taken a serious note of this," he said.
"This is due to three problems combined together. The land insecurity, ethnic Bodo people's feeling of insecurity and the demographic change that is taking place in the whole of Assam. The people of Assam are feeling that they will be left in minority in their state. This is a serious threat to the unity, integrity and the security of India," he added.
"The government should honour the SC's directive on illegal migrants and detect and deport them," he continued.
He further said that the problem must not be seen as a Hindu vs Muslim problem, but as an Indian vs foreigner problem.
"The government must try to create a national consensus. Political parties must be made a part of it. Let this problem not be viewed as a Hindu vs Muslim problem. It should be viewed as an Indian vs foreigner problem and an updated register of national citizens of India should be created. The non-Indians should be deleted from the voters list."

Congress (INC) and AGP want early Elections |
Jan 25: GUWAHATI: The ruling Congress and principal Opposition party the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in Assam seem to be in a hurry to fight the battle of ballots with both the parties expressing the desire for early elections in the state.
“We want the election ahead of Bihu and we are ready for it,” AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary said. “The Congress also wants the election ahead of Bihu,” APCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita said. The AGP said it favoured a five-phase election. “Given that the state doesn’t have adequate security personnel, we favour a multi-phase election. This will help curb rigging and booth-capturing,” Patowary said. The Congress said it would not enter into any pre-poll alliance with any party. “We won’t have pre-poll alliance with any party. However, we may have pre-poll understanding,” Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said. The Congress forged postpoll alliance with the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in the 2006 assembly elections. The party favours friendly contest with the BPF even this time round. “We have understanding with the BPF. We are now discussing the issue of alliance. But so far, no decision has been taken,” the APCC chief said. The AGP will possibly go it alone. The party had entered into a pre-poll alliance with the BJP in the last Lok Sabha elections. However, the arrangement appeared to have boomeranged on it as it managed to win only one of the six seats it had contested. Meanwhile, an EC delegation will visit the state on January 28 on a two-day visit. Sources here said the team, to be led by CEC SY Qureshi, would take stock of the state’s poll-preparedness. “The team will meet party leaders besides officials of the state government. Their views will then be looked into before the Commission deciding on the elections,” the sources added. |
