Congress withdraws second list of 46 candidates, Second Candidate List withdrawn, Gujarat Assembly Election 2012

Within two hours of releasing second list of candidates for Gujarat Assembly election, the Congress on Wednesday night withdrew 46 of 98 names from the lists.

No immediate reasons were cited by the Congress for the withdrawal of candidates.

Names that figured prominently on both the lists are that of Gujarat PCC chief Arjun Modhwadia, former PCC chief Siddharthbhai Patel and CLP leader Shaktisinhji Gohil. While Motwadia has been re-nominated for his Porbandher seat, Gohil has been fielded from Bhavnagar rural. Patel is the party candidatefrom Dabhoi.

The AICC had announced two lists of 52 and 46 candidates separately after a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The Election Commission has already issued notification for the first phase of Gujarat Assembly election for 87 constituencies where voting will be held on December 13. The notifications for the second phase of the election for the remaining 95 seats (of the total 182) will be issued on November 23. Polling for the second phase will be held on December 17.

The Congress has remained in the Opposition for the last two decades in the Gujarat State Assembly.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has declared four more candidates for the first phase of Gujarat assembly elections. All four seats are located in Saurashtra and enjoy great presence of Leuva Patel community.

1. Keshod – Arvind Ladani
2. Dhoraji – Haribhai Patel
3. Gariyadhar – Keshubhai Nakrani
4. Gondal – Jayrajsinh Jadeja

While Jayrajsinh Jadeja is former MLA, Shri Haribhai Patel is former MP.

Shri Arvindbhai Ladani is former member of Municipal Council, while Shri Keshubhai Nakrani is sitting MLA.

Narendra Modi to fight election from Maninagar constituency, Gujarat Assembly Elections 2012, Gujarat polls 2012,Gujarat Election News 2012, Gujarat News

20th Nov 2012: Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday indicated he will seek re-election from Maninagar Assembly constituency and asked BJP workers to work hard to ensure he wins the seat with a record margin.

"Let's have a competition between you (workers) and me. Let's see who comes out on top - you get me elected with maximum margin here or I get maximum seats out of 182 in the state. You worry only about one and I will worry about all other constituencies," he said at a gathering of party workers in his constituency.

 
In 2007 election, Modi had won Maninagar, which falls in Ahmedabad city, by around 75,000 votes defeating Dinsha Patel of Congress.

BJP is yet to declare its list of candidates for the assembly election to be held on December 13 and 17.

At the meet, Modi hit out at Congress and the party-led UPA government at the Centre.

"Congress has created a dirty tricks department whose main work is to indulge in character assassination, publish dirty literature about opponents and spread dirt during elections," the BJP stalwart alleged.

 
"Congress has allotted budget running into crores to this department, which is part of a conspiracy to blacken democracy. This might give them some sadistic pleasure but it will tarnish the democratic tradition of Gujarat."

"They were boasting about overthrowing my government by using Article 356 (President's Rule); what happened to it? I am standing right here, my government is here. They just want to crush Gujarat," Modi said.

"We enacted a law (Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Act) to protect the people from terrorism. Our assembly passed it five times but Delhi rejected it. Should we have no right to protect our people? Should we let people die of terrorism?" the Chief Minister asked.

Narendra Modi shares dais with Bhagwat, Singhal at religious meet, Gujarat polls 2012,Gujarat Election News 2012, Gujarat News

Ahmedabad: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and VHP leader Ashok Singhal shared dais at a religious convention here in poll-bound Gujarat on Wednesday.

They attended a session on the second day of the three-day convention organised by Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha (HDAS) at Swaminaryan Gurukul at Chharodi on the city's outskirts.

 
Modi sharing dais with Bhagwat and Singhal assumes significance in the backdrop of reports about resentment against the Chief Minister in some sections of RSS and VHP in the state which goes to the polls next month.

The three leaders were briefly joined by Yoga Guru Ramdev, who is touring the state for his Yoga camps.

BJP's Gujarat affairs in-charge Balbir Punj was also present at the convention attended by more than 100 religious leaders. The meet was not open to media.

 
"All three leaders were present at the convention. They talked about religion and no political matter was discussed," Swami Vishokanand Bharti, a Bikaner-based religious leader, said after coming out of the meet.

During his last visit to Gujarat a few months ago, Bhagwat had not met Modi. The BJP stalwart then travelled to Nagpur and met top RSS leaders, including Bhagwat, last month.

Former Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel, who has formed his own political party to overthrow Modi from power, has openly sought support of RSS and VHP in the state.
