Karnataka Bye Election

A by-election (also spelled as "bye-election"), also known as a special election, is an election held to fill a political office that has become vacant between general elections. Usually, a by-election occurs when the incumbent has died or resigned. List of Chief Ministers of Karnataka
The Chief Minister of Karnataka is the chief executive of the south Indian state of Karnataka. As per the Constitution of India, the governor is a state's de jure head, but de facto executive authority rests with the chief minister. Following elections to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, the state's governor usually invites the party (or coalition) with a majority of seats to form the government. The governor appoints the chief minister, whose council of ministers are collectively responsible to the assembly. Given that he has the confidence of the assembly, the chief minister's term is for five years and is subject to no term limits.

Yeddyurappa quits BJP says was stabbed in the back, Yeddyurappa starts new Party, KS Yeddyurappa leaves BJP floats new party KJP, Yeddyurappa starts new party Karnataka Janata Party, Karnataka News 2012

Ahmedabad, 3 Dec 2012

Bangalore: Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Friday announced he has sent his resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to party president Nitin Gadkari.

“I have resigned from primary membership of BJP and sent letter to party president Nitin Gadkari,” announced Yeddyurappa at a public meeting at Freedom Park in the city centre.

Ahead of the public meeting he offered prayers at a temple and turned emotional shedding tears while talking to reporters.

He said that he was leaving the BJP with a "heavy heart" as "I have given my 40 years of life to build it".

The 69-year-old Yeddyurappa then resigned from the State Assembly, soon after quitting the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He submitted his resignation to Speaker KG Bopaiah at the state secretariat in the city centre and urged that it be accepted immediately.

He then told the Speaker that he was giving up his Assembly seat on his own.

Yeddyurappa represented Shikaripura in his home district Shimoga, about 280 km north of Bangalore.

Earlier in the day, Yeddyurappa became emotional as he recalled his long association with the party even as he trained his guns at BJP leaders for hatching a "conspiracy" against him.

"The party has given everything to me. And I have sacrificed my life to build my previous party (BJP)", he said, fighting back tears.

Yeddyurappa said he is leaving the party "because of our own (BJP) people. They don't want me to continue in the party; that's why I am resigning from the primary membership as also MLAship".

"Some people (in BJP) did not want me to continue as chief minister. They tried to put me in the dock. I tolerated in the past one year with a lot of patience", Yeddyurappa said. "I am leaving the party with deep sadness".

Without naming anybody, he said some state leaders "stabbed me in the back".

“Despite all my contributions to the party, and getting so many Lok Sabha seats, still BJP has not treated me well,” said the Lingayat leader.

Earlier in the day, the entire BJP unit in Yeddyurappa's constituency quit.

Commenting on the development, Yeddyurappa had said: “I have not requested anyone to resign from the BJP for the time being. I request my supporting MLAs not to resign from their membership for now.”

The BJP has 119 members in the 225-strong Assembly, whose term ends in May next.

The Lingayat leader, who is credited with bringing BJP to power in Karnataka and making it as the first ever party government in the South, had requested all his well wishers and supporters to come to his rally and bless him to help build a strong state.

Yeddyurappa, who is sure of receiving people’s support in the upcoming polls, further vowed to defeat BJP and contest in every constituency.

Yeddyurappa's exit is expected to put the BJP at a crossroads, but the party leaders have put up a brave face saying it will have no impact.

He asserted that he was firm on his resolve to launch his new regional party, Karnataka Janata Party (KJP), which would formally come into existence on December 09 at Haveri.

Yeddyurappa and his loyalists have been claiming that at least 50 legislators were keen on joining KJP.

However, Jagadish Shettar, the BJP's third Chief Minister in its over four years of rule in Karnataka, and state BJP chief KS Eshwarappa claim that only a handful of party legislators would join the new outfit.

All efforts by top BJP leadership including its president Nitin Gadkari and senior leader Arun Jaitley to prevent the "worst", failed to pacify the agitated Yeddyurappa, who was axed from chief ministership in 2011 in the wake of allegations of corruption.

Yeddyurappa turned more belligerent after BJP rebuffed his repeated attempts to regain chief ministership and refused to at least make him the state unit party chief. Enraged over what he called as 'betrayal' by his party leaders, Yeddyurappa decided to bid a good bye to BJP and float his regional party.

Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yeddyurappa began his political stint when he was elected as president of the Shikaripura Taluk erstwhile Jana Sangha in 1972 and won his first Assembly poll in 1983.

I will announce my decision by evening: Yeddyurappa

BANGALORE: The political crisis in the ruling BJP in Karnataka today loomed large with rebel leader and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa deciding to take a final call on his future political course by this evening.

"I will consult MPs, MLAs and my supporters today and announce my decision by 4 PM", Yeddyurappa, who has been fuming at BJP central leadership for "ignoring" him, particularly after the Supreme Court order for a CBI probe into illegal mining during his tenure as chief minister, told reporters.

Yeddyurappa, who visited Siddganga mut pontiff Shivakumara Swamiji of the Lingayat community to which he belongs, attacked BJP general secretary H N Anantkumar, State unit chief K S Eshwarappa, chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda and RSS leader Satish.

He accused Anantkumar of "feeding malicious information" about him to BJP leader L K Advani.

"Anantkumar made efforts to topple me from the chief ministership at least thrice earlier with the help of mine owners", Yeddyurappa alleged.

In a damage-control bid, Eshwarappa today ruled out accepting resignations of more than half a dozen MLAs and dropping ministers loyal to Yeddyurappa.

"There is truth in the fact that about more than half a dozen MLAs and ministers have tendered resignation to Yeddyurappa. However, the party will neither accept their resignations nor drop any ministers," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, MLAs and Ministers loyal to Yeddyurappa met at a breakfast meeting at his Race Course residence where the consultation process has begun.

Sources close to Yeddyurappa claim that he has been toying with the idea of quitting BJP, a development that would threaten the survival of the four-year-old BJP government, the first ever in the South.

Eight ministers loyal to Yeddyurappa have already handed over their resignation letters to their leader.

In another development, the BJP central leadership has reportedly rejected Yeddyurappa's demand for change in the leadership of Sadananda Gowda. Power minister Shobha Karandlaje, who was sent as Yeddyurappa's emissary to hold talks with BJP central Leadership is, returning empty handed.

As a last effort to save the situation, Eswarappa said the entire BJP was with Yeddyurappa. Eswarappa's parleys with Yeddyurappa yesterday have failed to end the crisis.

In the 225-member assembly, BJP has a strength of 120. Yeddyurappa claims to have the support of at least nine ministers and 45 MLAs.

Eshwarappa also said he has not received the resignation letters either from the ministers or the MLAs. "I have been in touch with these MLAs and ministers and I am telling confidently as the state party chief that they will not quit," he said.

On Yeddyurappa praising Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her party for being supportive of leaders facing trouble "unlike" his own party, Eshwarappa said BJP leadership had never left any of their leaders including L K Advani, Narendra Modi, Madan Lal Khurana and Uma Bharti in the lurch during crisis.

The BJP leadership had always stood behind Yeddyurappa and expressed hope that he would come out clean in the illegal mining case, Eshwarappa said.

He also said he failed to understand the reason for Yeddyurappa to praise Sonia Gandhi and her party. "I would like to make it clear that all BJP leaders, including central leaders are with Yeddyurappa," Eshwarappa said.

"I think Yeddyurappa is giving such statements (praising Sonia Gandhi) out of pain. There is no question of Yeddyurappa quitting the party," he said.

Eswarappa also believed the crisis would be resolved soon.

BJP Government Wins trust vote in Karnataka, BJP Karnataka News

Bangalore, Oct 11

BJP Government in Karnataka wins the trust vote and Chief minister Sri B.S. Yeddyurappa continues. 106 MLAs voted in support of the Government.

Bangalore, Oct 8

Karnataka assembly Speaker K.G. Bopaiah Friday served notice to 11 legislators of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to explain why they should not be disqualified for indulging in anti-party activities.

The speaker issued the notice through the legislature secretariat after the ruling party petitioned him late Thursday to invoke the Anti-Defection Act, 1985, against the party's 14 rebels and five Independents. They submitted a joint letter to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj Wednesday withdrawing support to the government and expressing lack of confidence in the leadership of state Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

The legislators are - Excise Minister M.P. Renukacharya, Gopalakrishna Beluru, Anand Asnotikar, Balachandra Jarkiholi, B.N. Sarvabhouma, Bharamgowda Kage, Y. Sampangi, G.N. Nanjundaswamy, M.V. Nagaraju, Shivan Gowda Nayak and H.S. Shankaralinge Gowda.

The other charges against the rebels are - joining hands with rival Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and Independents to reduce the government to minority and creating political instability in the state.

Yeddyurappa Thursday dropped Asnotikar and Jarkiholi from the council of ministers and Wednesday sacked four Independent ministers -- Agriculture Marketing & Small Scale Industries Minister Shivaraj S. Tangadagi, Textile & Sericulture Minister Venkataramanappa, Social Welfare Minister P.M. Narendra Swamy and Youth Services & Prisons Minister D. Sudhakar for revolting against his leadership.

Under the Anti-Defection Act, the dissident legislators face expulsion from the party and disqualification from contesting elections for six years if they defy the party whip and vote against the confidence motion. The chief minister will be moving to prove his majority on the floor of the legislative assembly Oct 11, as directed by the governor.

In the 225-member legislative assembly, including one nominated, the BJP has effectively 117 members, the Congress has 73, the JD-S 28 and Independents six.
