List of Chief Ministers of Karnataka
The Chief Minister of Karnataka is the chief executive of the south Indian state of Karnataka. As per the Constitution of India, the governor is a state's de jure head, but de facto executive authority rests with the chief minister. Following elections to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, the state's governor usually invites the party (or coalition) with a majority of seats to form the government. The governor appoints the chief minister, whose council of ministers are collectively responsible to the assembly. Given that he has the confidence of the assembly, the chief minister's term is for five years and is subject to no term limits.

Karnataka election Update: Candidates make beeline to temples.

Bangalore:

Karnataka-pc-wise

As the poll fever hots up in Karnataka for the May 5 Assembly Elections, the candidates in the fray are making a beeline to temples hoping for a divine swing in their favour.

Whether it is Gali Anjaneya Temple, the famous Bull temple or the Lord Narasimha Temple here, candidates and their supporters are seen waiting patiently to have a darshan, promising generous donations, if they emerge victorious.

According to the priests, the candidates consult their respective family astrologers before visiting a temple and are very particular on performing certain "poojas" on specific days as per their horoscopes.

"It is sometimes interesting to see an individual who has never paid obeisance to gods in his life time, bending backwards to please the almighty for his own selfish reason. But he does not know that he can take the people, not the gods for a ride", said a priest on condition of anonymity.

The rush in the temples is more during early morning and late evening with the candidates spending over an hour at the temples, the married ones along with their spouses, offering huge floral garlands and fruits to the gods.

Varadarajan (name changed), the head priest of a famous temple says, "most of them (candidates) utilise their visit to the temple to interact with the public, an indirect way of campaigning".

"One can see them at their politest best with the public and also donating generously to beggars who sit on temple steps, a behaviour which can be witnessed only before polls", he said.

"We, besides astrologers are very much in demand in such times. The astrologers to foretell the political future of the candidates and advise them as to what they should do to fulfil their political aspirations and we to help them with implementation of the astrologers' instructions. We make hay while the sun shines", he says unflinchingly with a smile.

Bangalore:

In the battle for Karnataka, Congress, the party with the upper hand, is facing problems like never before. Ambarish has been a Lok Sabha member, a union minister and is now the chosen one for the Mandya Assembly seat. Rebel star Ambarish, as he is known in film circles, has been rebelling in real life though.

He refused to file his nomination on Monday, angry that the Congress did not issue a ticket to his choice for the neighbouring Srirangapatna constituency. Ambarish got his way on Tuesday, but the revolt is a snub to the other prominent Vokkaliga leader of the Mandya region, SM Krishna. With over 3,000 ticket seekers for the 224 assembly seats, time is running out for the Congress as Wednesday is the last date to file nominations.

Senior party leaders are unable to contain simmering resentment in other places too. In Chikaballapur, angry party workers damaged the party office. In Bellary, an ex-MLA has threatened that over 20 corporators will resign. In Shimoga, rebels are contesting as independents. In Davangere and Bangalore, there are protests against dynastic politics and the JDS is poaching unhappy Congressmen.

Ego clashes are a persistent problem with the Congress as the party has not been able to project a single leader as its face in Karnataka. Besides, while they have leaders from all communities, it has failed to appeal to the majority Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities with a united face.

Bellary:15 April 2013

bellary pkg2123

The Assembly elections in Karnataka are just three weeks away. In the mining hub of Bellary, the voters are livid.

126 mines in the district have been shut down by the Supreme Court leaving a crore people jobless.

The question is whether the Congress will benefit from the Bharatiya Janata Party's failings.

Bellary still witnesses the largest haul of money and liquor by poll officials.

But after Janardhana Reddy was jailed, his aide Sriramulu's fringe party hasn't made a mark.

The BSR Congress managed to win only a few seats in the recent municipal elections. The BJP, though, is taking a self-righteous plank before the voters.

BJP Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said, "We already expressed regrets and apology. Whatever bad things happened in the government regarding corruption or other chages, for that we apologised."

But, Bellary's voters are livid. The last five years have taught Karnataka politicians one big lesson - the power of the independent. Some Bellary MLAs of the 2008 election are shunning both the BJP and the BSR Congress to go it alone this election. They could then ally with any party that comes to power and call the shots in case of a hung assembly.

Sons of senior Congress leaders M Mallikarjuna Kharge and N Dharam Singh were given tickets to contest the May five assembly elections in Karnataka in the second list of 40 candidates announced by the party on Sunday.

However, Micro, Medium and Small Enterprise (MSME) Minister K H Muniyappa failed to get ticket for his daughter Roopa Shashidhar from Kolar Gold Fields constituency, where the party has now fielded Shankar V.

Priyank Kharge and Ajay Singh would contest from Chittapur and Jewargi, respectively. The party has also decided to give "B' form to independents D Sudhakar (Hiriyur) and P M Narendraswamy (Malavalli), ignoring protests by some local party leaders in those constituencies.

Rajya Sabha member Anil Lad would contest from Bellary city, while senior leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa would enter the fray from Davangere South. C S Putte Gowda, who recently crossed over to the Congress, has been given ticket to contest from Shravanabelagola, from where he had won in the 2008 elections on JDS symbol.

Senior Congress leader B K Hariprasad's brother B K Shivaram, a former senior Police official, has been given ticket for Malleshwaram seat, while Tejaswini Gowda would contest from Bangalore South.

Chamrajpet seat in the city has been given to G A Bava, a former Police official and a close follower of Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily.

According to party sources, the latest list suggested that the party has given tickets to some of those who are believed to have cross-voted during elections to the Legislative Council from the Assembly last year.

The Congress had announced its first list of 177 candidates on April five. With another 40 names cleared today, the party now needs to name nominees in the remaining seven segments which, sources said, continued to be bone of contention among leaders.

Elections would be held for 224 Assembly seats. The last date for filing nominations is April 17.

A monthly pension of Rs 500 for all farmers over 65 years and loan at 1% for women, is among the sops on offer in the manifesto of ex-Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa's newly-formed Karnataka Janata Party (KJP).

Apart from offering a waiver of loans of up to Rs one lakh for farmers, weavers and fishermen, BSY has gone the whole hog in terms of placating religious vote-banks in the state.

After allocating Rs 2,000 crore for Muslims, his party manifesto also promises to provide basic amenities and self-employment opportunities for them.

Christians would get a budget allocation of Rs 250 crore in the budget for their development.

A law would be enacted for protection of women, with non-bailable cases booked against the culprits, the manifesto released here recently said.

“Potable drinking water will be supplied and toilets built in all villages of the state. All pending irrigation projects will be completed within five years. 5,000 MW will be generated to completely remove power shortage and help agriculture and industrial sector,” Yeddyurappa said at the launch of his party manifesto here.

KJP has also proposed to extend ‘Bhagyalakshmi’ (insurance for a girl child) and ‘Sandhya Suraksha’ (pension) schemes to middle-class families.

Besides, a capital investment of Rs 1 lakh each would be given to the 1.75 lakh self help women groups besides providing them with training and work sheds to produce different varieties of products.

A capital investment of Rs 1 lakh each would be given to the 1.75 lakh self help women groups besides providing them necessary training and work sheds to produce different varieties of useful products.

The government will also take responsibility of marketing materials produced by them.

A women cooperative bank would be established involving all these self-help groups and women engaged in self-employment.

The government will release Rs 2,000 crore to this bank and loan at the rate of one per cent interest would be advanced to women.

Yeddyurappa’s stronghold in Karnataka is the Lingayat community from which he hails.

But this being his party KJP’s debut election, he has tried to address every major requirement of farmers, women and minorities in his party’s manifesto.

It only remains to be seen what effect his promises have on the Karnataka voter.

Ahead of the Karnataka Assembly Elections, state Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar expressed hope that he would grab the top seat once again.

Calling himself as an ‘honest’ politician at a programme here, Shettar underlined the development works he carried out during his short tenure as the CM.

“Within eight months I have completed (all) works, which other chief ministers would have taken five years to do,” Shettar said. “Though the Opposition leaders ridiculed that my tenure would end within two months, 12 legislators resigned their membership and some people were against my presenting the state budget, I have completed nine months in power.”

He further urged people to elect him to the Assembly for the fifth time.

Listing major development works he undertook during his tenure, Shettar said he did the impossible by bringing Rs 1,600 crore for the development of the twin-city. Also, he mentioned 24-hour drinking water project, park development, drainage system, four-lane road and airport development as some of the major works in the city during his stint as the CM.

karnataka Assembly Poll 2013: Battle for Karnataka,Parties take to social media to connect to the voters, karnataka latest news update, karnataka political news .

Bangalore:

In the battle for Karnataka, a lot is playing out on the social media, especially Twitter. The Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress and BS Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janata Paksha have all joined the bandwagon. The question is whether the Election Commission will be able to regulate online campaigns.

Sanjay Gowdar Sidappa leads the team of silent warriors for Yeddyurappa's KJP. He is a part of the social media strategy cell that puts its skills to use to take on other political parties ahead of the elections. "More than employment, hundreds of people have voluntarily come forward and they have been putting in hours together," Sanjay said.

krntk

Taking a cue from Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's successful social media campaign in Gujarat, the BJP's Karnataka wing is tweeting away. With around 6,000 followers so far, the party is hoping the votes on the ground at least exceed that figure.

BJP spokesperson S Prakash said, "Twitter and social media are a forum where you can generate public opinion, interact and present facts to the people. At present, strict vision by the EC where it prohibits spending money, the social media comes handy."

Social-Media-Marketing

The Congress has also jumped on board the social media wagon organising Google Hangouts with its leaders in Karnataka to showcase the party's ability to speak the language of the youth. Regional parties like the JD(S) too are looking to break away from their rural image and showcase their virtual skills.

On its part, the Election Commission has put in place a ban on any kind of campaign 48 hours prior to the elections.

But with a flood of Twitter and Facebook messages already out on cyberspace, how effectively will the election watchdog be able to curb the social media campaign wars?
