About the Constituency:

The Lok Sabha constituency of Nellore is one of the 42 Parliamentary seats which belong to the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The total number of electorates in the Nellore Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 39) according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports are 1,450,938 of which 712,629 are males and 738,309 are females.

It is situated in the district of Nellore, which has been officially renamed in 2008 as Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore District, after Potti Sri Ramulu, who was a renowned freedom fighter of this region. This district of Nellore is primarily an agricultural economy, although due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal, a flourishing seaborne trade from Krishnapatnam and other such port cities in the district is visible. Known as the ‘Shrimp Capital of India’, the Guntur district produces the finest breed of shrimps and prawns, which is a main contributor to the economy. The economy also flourishes on small-scale and handloom industries scattered in this district, as well as with the cultivation of crops such as rice, sugarcane and paddy.

Political Relevance:

The constituency of Nellore has been a vote-bank bastion of the Congress since its formation as a Lok Sabha seat, although the present MP of the seat, Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, who was re-elected in the bye-elections in 2012, was previously a member of the Congress, before now representing the seat as a member of the YSR Congress.

The Narsapuram Parliamentary constituency is among the 42 comprising Andhra Pradesh. It was formerly called the Narasapurm Parliamentary constituency. The Narsapuram Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 27) has a total of 1,173,138 electorates out of which 605,817 are females and 567,321 are males according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports.

In 1921, when the Krishna and Godavari Districts were divided, the new district of West Godavari came into existence. This district is known as the ‘Granary of India’, owing to the high grain-production in the region fed by the Godavari River. Some of the staple crops grown here are cotton, banana, corn, tobacco and sugarcane. It is also a flourishing industrial sector, with the presence of companies such as Reliance, ONGC and Cairn. Some of the tourist destinations in this part of the West Godavari District include the Polavaram Project, the Dwarka Tirumala Temple or the Chinna Tirupathi, the Somaramam as one of the five pancharama khsetras, the Perupalem Beach of Mogalhur Mandal, and the Kolleru Lake.

Situated in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh is the Nandyal Lok Sabha constituency. Fed by the Krishna River is the district of Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, which houses the Lok Sabha constituency of Machilipatnam. Machilipatnam is one of the 42 Lok Sabha seats which belongs to this southern Indian state. The total number of electorates in the Machilipatnam Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 29) according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports are 1,251,053 of which 610,668 are males and 640,385 are females.

 

Demographic and Commercial Background :

With a total population of 4,529,009 (2011 data), the Krishna district is one of the most urbanised regions in the state. The city of Machilipatnam is the administrative seat of power in the district, and the city of Vijayawada is the commercial hub of the district, besides being the biggest city in the Krishna district. Though the bulk of the economy is supported by agricultural activities, a growing interest in trade and commerce is evident. Many industries such as the KCP Sugar Factory and the Bharat Electrical Limited in the Machilipatnam area are some of the most renowned businesses in the district.
