09 Feb: Assam polls will be showdown ‘between Modi and me’, says Tarun Gogoi - Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said that the ensuing state assembly election, likely to be held in April, would be a showdown between him and prime minister Narendra Modi, and that the Congress party would “crush” the BJP as did the Assamese to the Mughals in the 17th century.

23 Dec: Election Commission Team in Assam to Assess Poll Preparedness - A team of the Election Commission of India (ECI) headed by the Chief Election Commissioner Dr Nasim Zaidi on Monday started a two-day visit to Assam to assess the situation on the ground before the elections to the State Assembly, which is due next year.

Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain is mounting pressure on the party leadership to help his son Ritul Borgohain contest from Nagaon constituency. Suman Haripriya, the film maker daughter of Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakrabartty is also in the race for ticket to contest the assembly polls. At least 3600 leaders have applied for 126 constituencies.

24-Apr-2015 1.41 lakh ‘D’ voters in State, says EC
EC had stated that as on date there are a total of 1,41,733 persons marked with ‘D’ in the electoral rolls of Assam. The voters categorised as ‘D’ are not allowed to vote. This process is followed strictly to remove the names of the foreign citizens from the electoral roll, the Minister said.
Meanwhile, according to figures furnished by the Minister, Barpeta, Dhubri and Nagaon have the highest number of ‘D’ voters in Assam. At least 13,026 ‘D’ category voters are in Dhubri, 15,357 in Nagaon and 22,751 in Barpeta.
