Tiwa council elections : Congress wins, gets 50% seats, State Election Commissioner,Lok Sabha,Congress, Asom Gana Parishad, TAC election, Tiwa council election result, Tiwa Autonomous Council election2015 result
GUWAHATI: The Congress has reason to cheer after it emerged as the single largest party in the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC), the result of which was announced on Saturday. Out of 30 seats, Congress won 15. Independents secured 10 seats and BJP had to contend with three. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), however, managed to win two seats.
"Counting was held smoothly," state election commissioner H N Bora said.
"Victory of Congress in the Tiwa Autonomous Council election has proved that the popularity of Congress government is on the upswing. People have realized BJP's promises are hollow and Congress victory in Tiwa Autonomous Council election is an indicator of this," chief minister Tarun Gogoi tweeted on Saturday.
The TAC election was the first in which Congress won most seats since the Lok Sabha election last year.
As soon as news of the results began pouring in, Rajiv Bhavan, the Congress headquarters here, plunged into celebrations. Congress workers burst crackers and dubbed the victory a 'testimony of people's trust in the party that has been ruling TAC since 2010'.
Congress leaders said the party's performance in the TAC election would be a morale-booster for workers ahead of the 2016 assembly polls. In the Lok Sabha election, Congress won only three out of 14 seats. In polls to the urban bodies, it lost to BJP. In the Bodoland Territorial Council election, too, it failed to live up to its expectations.
On the other hand, the scene at the BJP headquarters, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhavan here, was sombre. The party fielded candidates from 27 constituencies and, in the run-up to the polls, exuded confidence. "We accept the mandate. The TAC polls provided us with the opportunity of strengthening our organizational structure. This will help us in the assembly polls," BJP in-charge for the TAC election, Atul Bora said.
A total of 2,13,117 voters exercised their franchise across 30 constituencies spread over Morigaon and Nagaon districts in the TAC polls held on August 19. Election were not held in six constituencies that fall under Kamrup (Metro) district due to resistance from different pressure groups.
