Third Front are Congress supporters with a different name: Narendra Modi

Narendra ModiBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that in the Third Front nine out of 11 parties have constantly been supporting the Congress and that during elections these parties wore the veil of Third Front. He called them Congress supporters in disguise.

"I have come with intent and not promises. Western India has developed faster because many states there have BJP governments - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, and look at the east, only those who speak of the Third Front are in power here," said Modi.

The Congress and NCP will hold talks today to their discuss seat-sharing strategy for the Lok Sabha elections. The talks are expected to be held between NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel and Congress' Ahmed Patel and A K Antony.

Sources said the parties are likely to maintain the 26-22 formula under which Congress will contest 26 seats and NCP 22 in Maharashtra which has 48 seats. It is second largest state after UP (80 seats) in terms of Lok Sabha members.

State Congress leaders including PCC chief Manikrao Thakre and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan favour 19 seats for NCP.

NCP is the oldest ally of Congress and the two parties have been fighting Parliament elections since 2004. They have been sharing power in Maharashtra since 1999, soon after Pawar parted ways on the issue of Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin.

The bone of contention is Kolhapur seat which was allotted to NCP but was won by an NCP rebel who has become an associate member of Congress.

There is a talk of swapping of some seats in Marathwada and north Maharashtra between the two parties.

"After discussions with NCP, we will announce our seat sharing formula. The meeting will take place on February 11 and February 12, after which we will issue a joint statement," Thakre had told reporters recently.

Narendra Modi's rally at Kolkata's iconic Brigade ground was supposed to be an indicator of whether the Modi wave's resonance could be felt in Bengal as well. If swelling crowds were to be an indication to go by, it was much more than a wave.

elec2014New Delhi: The Election Commission has said that Lok Sabha elections will be held in five or six phases and the dates will most probably be announced in the last week of February or early March, "We will announce the election dates in the end of February like we did in 2009," said Election Commissioner of India HS Brahma.

He hinted that the Election Commission may go for a six-phase polling this time. He said, "In 2009 we had a five-phase election, we may do a six-phase this time. We are yet to firm that up after meeting with the officials Ministry of Home Affairs and after understanding the ground situation across India."

He said that the Election Commission had already started preliminary preparations and all was going in full swing.
Cautioning political leaders against making personal attacks on their rivals, Brahma said, "Certain comments that are not palatable whether election or not let's not indulge in it. We should limit ourselves as gentlemen." Reacting to a question on state funding of elections, he said that there were some proposals earlier and they were not approving it. He said, "we have decided against it."

He also opposed the opinion polls saying that "the opinion polls should definitely be banned". Expressing hope about the right to recall, Brahma said, "NOTA is making a huge difference, rural voters are familiar with it, it will have a tremendous impact."

However, he also added that India in the present state was not prepared for Right to Cecall "It's okay at gram panchayat and municipal level elections, at India at a whole we can't use it. How do we implement it? It's too early for right to recall. We don't have systems in place," he said.

assemtKanpur: Riding high on its outstanding performance in Delhi elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is likely to field cartoonist-turned-activist Aseem Trivedi from Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency against Congress' Sriprakash Jaiswal and Samajwadi Party's candidate Raju Srivastava.

"Yes, talks are on with the AAP leaders pertaining to Lok Sabha ticket from Kanpur," Aseem Trivedi told News18 over the phone.
"I am ready to contest against Sriprakash Jaiswal if AAP offers me ticket. Let's see," Aseem Trivedi added.

Noteworthy, Sriprakash Jaiswal has been elected three times as an MP from Kanpur's Parliamentary constituency. Currently, he holds the coal portfolio.

Aseem Trivedi, a Kanpur-based cartoonist-turned-activist, hogged the limelight after he was arrested by the Mumbai Police for allegedly mocking the Indian Constitution by means of his political cartoons during an Anna Hazare rally. There was widespread outrage after his arrest as the supporters alleged that his arrest episode is politically motivated and he is being punished for backing Hazare's anti-corruption campaign.

Also, Aseem Trivedi was one of the contestants of the reality TV programme Bigg Boss 6 in 2012.
AAP on Thursday had released its first list of probable candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
