About the Constituency:

Situated in the district of Kozhikode is the parliamentary constituency of Kozhikode, which is one of the 20 Lok Sabha seats belonging to the state of Kerala. 1,053,817 is the total electorate count in the Kozhikode Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 5). Out of these 510,361 number of electorates are males and the remaining 543,456 are belong to the female category as the Election commission of India 2009 reports suggest.

Out of the seven Assembly seats which comprise the Lok Sabha seat of Kozhikode, Balusseri is reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste category.

About  Kozhikode:

The district of Kozhikode has as its administrative headquarters, the coastal city of Kozhikode (or Calicut, as it was formerly known. This city holds immense historic value as the European travelers, most renowned of them being Vasco Da Gama, discovered this port city for its trading potential with the West. Calicut remained one of the primary trading centres of export for the Portuguese and later the British, who traded in items such as black pepper, myrobalans, and spices of various kinds.

With a population of 2,030,519 (2011 Census), the city of Kozhikode is the third-largest city in Kerala and remains an extremely important urban conglomeration. The economy of the Kozhikode district and the city, in particular, survives on easy accessibility to the trading hubs and centres in the region, with trade being the backbone of the economy. Fishing and sea-borne businesses also make up bulk of the economy. 

Political Background:

The constituency of Kozhikode has remained a Congress stronghold, although the CPIM and the Janata Dal have respectively won elections from this constituency.

About the Constituency:

The parliamentary constituency of Yavatmal-Washim is one of the 48 constituencies of the state of Maharashtra which was formed post the implementation of the 2008 delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. The Yavatmal Washim Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 14) consists of 1,554,042 number of electorates in totality, of these 805,904 are males and 748,138 are females as the Election commission of India 2009 data suggests.

Yavatmal city is a part of the Yavatmal district and the District covers an area of about 13,500 sq kms. The city has a height of over 400 metres. According to the census data of 2011, it had a population of over 1,16,700. It has a sex ratio of 988 females per 1,000 males and an average literacy rate of 91% with male and female literacy rates being 95% and 88%. Yavatmal is known as the Cotton City and its economic activities mostly include cotton-ginning and trade.  

About Yavatmal- Washim:

Washim city lies 109 kms away from Yavatmal and is the headquarters of Washim District. Earlier known as Vatsagulma, the city was home to over 62,000 people, as per the census of 2001 of which 52% constitutes of males, with a child population of 15%. The District has a sex ratio of 939 females per 1,000 males. The average literacy rate of the city is 70% with male and female literacy rates being 76% and 62%, respectively. Cotton cultivation is the primary economic activity here. 

Marathi is the official language of both Yavatmal and Washim and several educational institutions are located in the area.

The Buldhana Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 5) has a total of 1,382,736 electorates out of which 661,521 are females and 721,215 are males according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports.

About Buldhana:

The city of Buldhana is the centre of administration of the district of Buldhana and lies in the Amravati Division in the Vidharbha region. It is bordered by the state of Madhya Pradesh to its north, and district Buldhanahas a total area of about 9,640 sqkms and an average elevation of 640 metres. The infamous Lonar Crater Lake is located here. 

As of 2001, census data states that the total population of the city is about 63,000 of which 13% comprises of child population. Buldhana has a 52% male majority and a sex ratio of 946 females per 1,000 males. Marathi, Hindi and English are the officially used languages here. The average literacy rate is 82% with male and female literacy rates being 82% and 72%, respectively. The city has basic education facilities as well as the country’s first management institution. Small scale industries and tourism are the primary economic activities in the area. Several major cities of the state are connected to Buldhana via the State Highways, SH-24 and SH-176.

The Malappuram parliamentary constituency is one of the 20 Lok Sabha seats which represent the South Indian state of Kerala in the Lok Sabha or the Lower House of Parliament. According to Election Commission of India 2009 data the total electorates in the Malappuram Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 6) were 1,019,713 of which 517,937 are females and 501,776 are males.

 About Malappuram:

The city of Malappuram is the administrative seat of the eponymous district of Malappuram. With a population as large as 16,98,645 people, and an area spanning 3,000 square kilometers, the district of Malappuram is the fourth largest urban centre in Kerala.  

The district of Malappuram survives on the revenue generated by NRIs who work in the Middle East, as the remittances of migrated residents to the Middle Eastern countries is massive. Tourism sector is another major economical backbone in this district. Emerging industries in this constituency majorly belong to the trader community of the district, besides the other industries like timber manufacturing also carried out in epic proportions in the Malappuram district.

Chandrapur Parliamentary Constituency is one of the 48 constituencies of Lok Sabha in Maharashtra. The Chandrapur Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 13) has a total of 1,536,352 electorates out of which 740,196 are females and 796,156 are males according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports.

 About Chandrapur:

It acts as the administrative centre of the Chandrapur district and spreads over the Yavatmal district as well. The city of Chandrapur is also known as Chanda. It comprises of a population of 4,00,000 of which 50% are males. The city of Chandrapur is located at the junction of the Erai and Zarpar rivers and spreads over an area of about 80 km. 

The city also houses the state’s largest pit head thermal power station, i.e., the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station which sprawls over 120 sq km and is responsible for at least 25% of electricity of the whole state. Western Coalfield Limited, Indian Armed Force, Ordnance Factories Board, Ultratech Cement, and Steel Authority of India Limited are some of the 6,000 industries which boost the city’s industrial economy.

Chandrapur has a literacy rate of 80% and has several institutions for higher education, mostly in the fields of engineering, medical and law. It is known to be the educational centre of its district. The historic Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Arts, Commerce and Science is also situated here.
