About the Constituency:

Formed in the year 2008, following the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, the Pathanamthitta parliamentary constituency is one of the 20 constituencies representing the southern Indian state of Kerala in the Lok Sabha. The Pathanamthitta Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 17) has a total of 1,213,370 electorates out of which 636,150 are females and 577,220 are males according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports.

 About Pathanamthitta:

The Pathanamthitta parliamentary constituency covers the entire district of Pathanamthitta which is the newest district created in the state, following the Delimitation Commission’s Orders. The constituency thus is an integral part of the Central Travancore region of the state, which consists of three districts in the south-central regions of Kerala. Also popularly known as the ‘headquarters of pilgrimage tourism’, the Pathanamthitta district has the rich city of Pathanamthitta - also of the same name - as its administrative capital.

The Pathanamthitta district has a populationof 11,95,537 inhabitants, as per the 2011 census. And, the constituency boasts of a 96.93% literacy rate.

About the Constituency:

The parliamentary constituency of Ponnani, is a pivotal vote bank of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) which has continuously represented this seat from as early as the Lok Sabha elections of 1977. is It covers a portion of the Malappuram district, which is one of the three districts of the Central Travancore region in the southern coastal state of Kerala. The Ponnani Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 7) has a total of 997,075 electorates out of which 522,848 are females and 474,227 are males according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports.

Seven assembly segments make up the parliamentary constituency of Ponnani. Out of these, the coastal town city of Ponnani, which is one of the significant seven Vidhan Sabha segments in his constituency, is a coastal municipality in the Malappuram district.

About Ponnani:

Situated in the Malabar Coast, Ponnani city is one of the oldest ports in the state, contributing substantially to the economy of this constituency through fishing and other trading activities. Agriculture remains the primary aspect of the economic backbone of this constituency, as rice, arecanut and coconut are grown in superior qualities in this region. 

The constituency holds a population of 83,704 people, according to the Census of India 2011. This constituency is renowned for its excellent rates of literacy in the state, being an important centre for education in religious philosophies, especially Islam. It is also known as the town of mosques.

Covering the district of Thrissur in Kerala is the parliamentary constituency by the same name. The Thrissur Lok Sabha seat is one of the 20 parliamentary seats allotted to the state of Kerala. 1,174,161 is the total electorate count in the Thrissur Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 10). Out of these 553,223 number of electorates are males and the remaining 620,938 are belong to the female category as the Election commission of India 2009 reports suggest.

 Historical background about Thrissur:

Originally called Thirusivapperoor, the Thrissur city is not only the administrative headquarters of the Thrissur district, but the fourth largest city in the coastal state of Kerala. With as large a population figure as 18,54,783 people, the city is the third largest urban conglomerate in the state. Known as the ‘Cultural Capital’ of Kerala, this district of Thrissur has historically been an eminent hub of Hindu religious philosophy, besides being an exemplary academic centre with superb world class educational institutes such as Kerala Kalamandalam, Kerala University of Medical and Allied Sciences and Kerala Agricultural University among many others.  

The economy of the Thrissur district is solely dependent on big investments coming from rich entrepreneurs who belong to the state. The most famous industry is the jewelry industry, especially gold, besides an emerging economy of Ayurvedic drug manufacturing, and textile industry in the Thrissur district. Interestingly, India’s largest international convention centre, the Lulu Convention Centre is situated in the Thrissur constituency.

 Political Background:

Thrissur played a remarkable role in the anti-colonial freedom struggle, when in 1919, this city of Thrissur witnessed the first historic meeting of the Indian National Congress here, which structured the plan of action for the struggle against the British.

Situated in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala is the Lok Sabha constituency of Thiruvananthapuram. Thiruvananthapuram is the southernmost district of this coastal Indian state, and has as its administrative headquarters, the city of Thiruvananthapuram (or Trivandrum, as it is called). 1,122,047 is the total electorate count in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 20). Out of these 541,715 number of electorates are males and the remaining 580,332 are belong to the female category as the Election commission of India 2009 reports suggest.

About  Thiruvananthapuram:

Trivandrum is the capital of the state of Kerala. At different times in the electoral history of this constituency, Thiruvananthapuram has remained a stronghold not only of the Congress, but also of the Communist Party of India, both of whom have remained equal contenders to this seat. This district of Thiruvananthapuram is renowned for its rich contribution to the IT sector, as a number of multinational corporations and other software industries have continually flourished in this part of the state. With a population of 3,307,284 (2011 census), Thiruvananthapuram is the second most populous district in the state, after Malappuram

This constituency holds immense political importance in the overall context as Trivandrum is the political nerve of the state of Kerala. One of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in the southern Indian state of Kerala is Vatakara, which is also known as Badagara. The Vatakara Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 3) consists of 1,071,171 number of electorates in totality, of these 505,692 are males and 565,479 are females as the Election commission of India 2009 data suggests. This Lok Sabha constituency is situated in the Vatakara taluk, with the coastal municipality of Vatakara being the administrative headquarters of the taluk.

About Vatakara:

Being a coastal region, the primary occupation of the land is fishing, which constitutes the bulk of the economy. Commercial and trading centres in the region dot this parliamentary constituency.
