JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar Seen With Group Shouting Anti-National Slogans: Police Report,JNU, Kanhaiya Kumar, Supreme Court, Kanhaiya Kumar bail, Anti-National Slogans

NEW DELHI:  JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar was present with a group shouting anti-national slogans and indulging in anti-national activities on campus, the police have said a report defending his arrest. The police are likely to oppose the student's bail in the Delhi High Court, though police chief BS Bassi had said the opposite.

1. Kanhaiya Kumar's request for bail will be heard tomorrow by the high court, where heavy security is in place on the Supreme Court's order.
2. The court has asked the police to submit their report in an unsealed cover tomorrow, so that it can be accessed by the person seeking bail, Kanhaiya Kumar.
3. The 28-year-old student leader from Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU was arrested earlier this month on sedition charges, for allegedly making anti-national statements at an event on February 9 in support of terrorist Afzal Guru, where anti-India slogans were raised.
4. In their report on the incident, the police say that Mr Kumar is seen in footage that shows a group shouting anti-national slogans. They have also said he and other students went ahead with the Afzal Guru event even though permission for it had been cancelled.
5. The police have said the JNU's internal inquiry found evidence against eight students including Kanhaiya Kumar. The inquiry report of the university says Mr Kumar was seen shouting unconstitutional slogans.
6. Last week, the Supreme Court had declined to take up Mr Kumar's request for bail, asking him to move the high court and also ordering protection for his lawyers to avoid a repeat of two incidents of violence by lawyers at a lower court.
7. Kanhaiya Kumar, who was sent to Tihar Jail till March 2, had told the Supreme Court that he did not feel safe enough to go to the lower courts. He had also been attacked by lawyers last Wednesday at the Patiala House court.
8. The student has said in his bail petition that he was wrongly arrested on the basis of a police complaint that listed no evidence to book him under such a serious charge.
9. Two other JNU students charged with sedition, Umar Khalid and Anirban, have requested security to surrender in high court.
10. On Sunday night, Umar Khalid, Anirban and three others accused of sedition, who had been missing for days, showed up on the JNU campus and challenged the police to arrest them. The police have not been allowed to enter the campus and say the students must turn themselves in.
