According to the Mood of the Nation poll, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the best alternative to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.

The poll that puts debates to rest is here. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the best alternative to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, according to the second edition of the Mood of the Nation poll. Here are the big takeaways: 

1. Narendra Modi still considered best suited for PM. A sizeable 58 per cent rate Modi's performance (as PM) good.
2. 53 per cent think that his foreign trips have benefited India while 27 per cent said the trips were of no use.
3. Rahul Gandhi's popularity is up from 8 per cent in Aug 2015 to 22 per cent in Feb 2016.
4. Rahul Gandhi is also the best alternative to challenge Modi in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar is far behind, showing up after Sonia and Kejriwal as potential challengers in 2019.
5. Three of Modi's top five traits are negative.
6. Modi is still very popular among upper castes at 54 per cent but his popularity among SCs/STs is only 33 per cent.
7. Rahul Gandhi has only 20 per cent Hindus on his side but his acceptability among Muslims is nearly double at 38 per cent.
8. While a majority (58 per cent) rate Modi's performance as good or outstanding, it has dropped by 3 percentage points since August 2014.
9. 35 per cent blame the UPA for the stalemate in Parliament, only 19 per cent hold the ruling NDA responsible.
10. The poll rates late Indira Gandhi as the best PM ever. Modi's scores have dropped in the last year, from 30 per cent in April 2015 to 14 per cent now.

India Today Group Mood of the Nation poll was conducted by Karvy Insights Ltd. A total of 13,576 interviews were conducted across 97 Lok Sabha constituencies in 19 states: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Eight starting points across four directions were selected in each of the assembly constituencies, and questionnaires were handed out following a rigorous right-hand rule of household selection. The fieldwork for the Mood of the Nation poll was conducted between Jan 24 and Feb 5. The survey followed multi-stage stratified random sample design. All interviews were conducted face-to-face. Poll was conducted under the supervision of Ranjit Chib and Dixit Chanana of Karvy Insights.
