KMC Election 2015: Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) poll may become turning point for Congress

Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) poll may become turning point for Congress

The coming Siliguri Municipal Corporation poll is crucial for Congress for if it fails to win a respectable number of seats, the party will not be in a position to bargain and form the board jointly with any other party as it did in the last SMC poll.

The SMC election of 2009 witnessed Congress winning14 seats while its the then ally Trinamool secured 15 and Left Front bagged the rest 18 of the total of 47 seats.

Latest List of candidates:

However, the alliance of Congress and Trinamool faced a hard time in forming the corporation board largely due to the discord between the two parties over the post of mayor. This had led Trinamool to abstain from the process. The Left Front later joined the Congress and jointly formed the board. Congress councillor Gangotri Dutta was selected for the mayoral post. However, since its inception the board was plagued by internal conflict and irregularities and it was finally dissolved within the 20 months of its formation.

Election Schedule

According to political analysts this election is going to be a tough one for the Congress t amid the strong presence of BJP, Trinamool and LF in the fray. They point out the failure of the Congress-led SMC board and growing influence of BJP in north Bengal are some of the factors that may turn the tide against Congress in this forthcoming corporation election.

Election Result:

The analysts further said this civic poll will witness a close fight among the four big parties and the possibility of a party clinching the magic figure of 24 seats is low. This allows the Congress to be in a position to bargain if it secures even with a tally lower than that in the last election neither Trinamool nor the LF is likely to form an alliance with BJP to form the board. And, it is also unlikely that Trinamool and LF would come together.
