he first ever election to Vasai-Virar Municipal corporation passed off smoothly without any major untoward incident with approximately 50% of the 6.5 lakh electorate exercising their franchise, election officers said. The polls will decide the fate of 383 candidates spread over 88 wards. One candidate of the Hitendra Thakur led Bahujan Vikas Agadhi has already been declared elected unopposed. There are 603 polling stations out of which 203 have been declared sensitive. As many as 3500 polling staff are on duty.

The Vasai taluka, situated on the outskirts of North Mumbai had four municipal councils -- Vasai, Nala Sopara, Virar and Navghar-Manickpur and 72 gram panchayats. They were dissolved and the formation of the municipal corporation was announced. Since the last one year, there was agitation against including 53 villages in the proposed Corporation. The government decided to exclude 35 out of the 53. But, the election commission has ordered elections in all the villages. Bahujan Vikas Agadhi is contesting all the 89 seats, while Vivek Pandit's Jan Andolan Samiti is contesting 38. Even though Pandit is campaigning under the banner of Jan Andolan Samiti, the nomination papers have been filed as Lokhitwadi leader party.
