Prem Kumar Dhumal

Prem Kumar Dhumal born (10 April 1944) is the 12th and current chief minister of Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. He is an Indian politician who is a 2 time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh from March 1998 to March 2003 and again since 31 December 2007.

Personal and Education Info

Prem Kumar Dhumal was born in a Rajput family to Capt. Mahant Ram and Smt. Phulmu Devi on 10 April 1944, in the Samirpur of Hamirpur District, Punjab, British India.He has two sons named Arun Thakur and Anurag Thakur Mr. Dhumal started his career as an Assistant with the Life Insurance Corporation of India, having completed his Post Graduation in English literature and a degree in Law, while, first working with LIC and later as a teacher with the Panjabi University Evening College Jalandhar and then educated from Doaba College, Jalandhar city. He had also captained College volleyball team for three consecutive years.

Political Career

His political career has started when BJP stalwart Late Thakur Jagdev Chand the then sitting MLA of Hamirpur and most influential leader of the area refused to contest from Hamirpur parliamentary constituency in 1984. Mr Dhumal lost election but won in 1989 and 1991 , he represented Hamirpur parliamentary constituency till 1996. Then he lost this seat again to a light weight congress candidate Retd Gen Vikram Singh. After sudden death of Thakur Jagdev Chand in December 1993, Dhumal was the second senior most leader in BJP from Hamirpur on the other side two time CM Shanta Kumar had already lost 2 assembly elections so political void and legacy of Late Jagdev who was the first runner for the top post after 1993 victory since Thakur is not there, Dhumal who is a first time MLA in March 1998 was now CM of Himachal as well. Ironically Mr. Dhumal appointed the very same staff of late Thakur Jagdev when he was cabinet minister in Shanta Kumar's government till Nov 1993. Same Gun man, Driver Hari Singh and Chief adviser Mr. Onkar Thakur. Newly formed BJP government didn't had the simple majority newly formed Himachal Vikas Congress with 4 assembly seats and an Independent MLA Ramesh Dhawala lend their support to form this government.

 

Achievment 

The wide spread road network and the easy connectivity has earned him the sobriquet of "सड़क वाला मुख्यमन्त्री". His path breaking policy initiatives in the Education sector ensured 3 pucca rooms in each primary School in the state. This scheme was replicated in many states after being adopted by the NABARD. Merit Scholarships guaranteed education to all sections and development within the environmental limits resulted in conferment of Golden Peacock award, twice, first for the most innovative management practices in six key areas of governance and 2nd time for following the clean development mechanisms and thus also becoming the ‘Green Chief Minister’.
The Development, ‘vision documents’ for various departments coupled with the most liberal industrial package received by the state, were the other highlights of the first tenure. He also served as the leader of opposition in state legislative assembly of Himachal Pradesh before winning the Lok Sabha by-election in 2007 from Hamirpur. In the December 2007 elections, the BJP won the elections to the Vidhan Sabha and he became Chief Minister. He had previously held that role following the elections of 1998.
