Expenditure limit raised up to 5 Lakh in Zilla Panchayat Elections

Panaji: The state election commission (SEC) has raised the expenditure limit for candidates of the upcoming zilla panchayat elections from the existing 75,000 to 5 lakh.

Briefing mediapersons, state election commissioner M Modassir, who held a meeting of the returning officers (deputy collectors) and assistant returning officers (mamlatdars) for the ZP elections, said that since the elections are being held on political party lines, the expenditure limit has been raised. The limit for assembly elections is 20 lakh.

Though the actual schedule for the elections will be finalized in a day or two, Modassir said that elections have been fixed for March 18. The counting of votes will be done on March 20. The filing of nominations has been tentatively fixed for between February 28 to March 7. The code of conduct will also come into effect from February 28.

Modassir said that voting will be done through ballot papers and not through electronic voting machines (EVM). The high cost involved in procuring EVMs is one of the reasons for sticking to ballot papers.

Tuesday's meeting discussed various issues pertaining to the elections. These include delimitation, preparations, finalization of polling stations especially in view of higher secondary examinations, logistics and funds required.

"The returning officers and assistant returning officers have given various suggestions and these will be incorporated," Modassir said.
