JNUSU: AISF candidate elected prez, AISA gets 2 posts, ABVP wins 1 - For the first time, the All India Students' Federation (AISF) won the post of president in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU).
The poll results were announced on Sunday.
All India Students Association (AISA) managed to secure two other posts and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) grabbed the fourth post after a gap of 14 years.
AISF's Kanhaiya Kumar was elected the president with 1,085 votes. AISA's Shehla Rashid Shora and Rama Naga were elected as vice president and general secretary with 1,387 and 1,159 votes respectively.
The previous winner of ABVP in JNUSU polls was Sandeep Mahapatra-now a senior BJP leader-who was elected the president in 2001. Students said AISA, which had won the JNUSU polls in the last two years were unpopular this time because they had failed to fulfill its promises.
Among the issues raised by candidates of various student organisations, safety on campus and better hostel facilities were on top of the list.
The parties which contested the elections at JNU this year included All India Students Association (AISA), All India Students Federation (AISF), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Students Federation of India (SFI), National Students Union of India (NSUI), Democratic Student's Federation (DSF) and Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA).
