Congress may repeat its 2013 winners, runners-up

NEW DELHI: All of Congress' eight MLAs in the last assembly are likely to get tickets to contest the February 2015 elections as the party tries to regain lost ground after being reduced to a distant third place in December 2013. Another 16 contestants who finished second in their seats are also likely to be fielded.

Former CM Sheila Dikshit had also finished second in her constituency, and it will be interesting to see whether the party fields her as she has openly talked about not seeking an active role in politics. Congress has remained tightlipped on her, maintaining the uncertainty over a likely substitute candidate. Sources said the party is searching for a fresh face to take on AAP chiefArvind Kejriwal. Sonia Gandhi has given in-principle approval to the proposal to give tickets to eight ex-MLAs and consider the 16 who finished second. A final decision is likely in a day or two. Click here for Complete list of candidates

The party is also considering giving tickets to many fresh faces this time. It finished third or fourth on 46 seats and faces a challenge in finding winning candidates. The CEC held its first meeting to decide on the first list of contestants on Saturday. In a break from convention, Congress is learned to be keen to announce names fast so that campaigning can pick up from the first week of January itself. The CEC meeting was also attended by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and the AICC top leadership including Ahmad Patel, P C Chacko and Veerappa Moily. Delhi was represented by Congress state president Arvinder Singh and former MLA and CLP leader Haroon Yusuf.

Congress won eight seats last December:

  • Gandhi Nagar (Arvinder Singh),
  • Ballimaran (Haroon Yusuf),
  • Chandni Chowk (P S Sawhney),
  • Okhla (Asif Mohd Khan),
  • Seelampur (Chaudhary Mateen Ahmad),
  • Mustafabad ( Hasan Ahmad),
  • Sultanpur Majra (Jai Kishan)
  • Badli (Devender Yadav)

Matia Mahal ex-MLA from JD(U) Shoaib Iqbal, who has now joined Congress, is also expected to be on the first list. Among the prominent members who finished second are ex-minister AK Walia (Laxmi Nagar) and RK Chauhan (Mangolpuri). DPCC chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma (Uttam Nagar ex-MLA) is also on the list. CEC leaders, after assessing the winnability of candidates, are considering repeating nearly all of these candidates. The party has received 1,200 applications for tickets.
