Municipal elections regarding the post of Mayor, Senior Deputy-Mayor and Deputy-Mayor are supposed to be held in Chandigarh on 9th January and the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election results counting of votes would be done on the same day.

BJP sorts out party rift sweeps all three mayoral seats

1. The BJP won the posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the voting for which was held on Tuesday.
2. Davesh Moudgil won the post of mayor, Gurpreet Singh Dhillon senior deputy mayor and Vinod Aggarwal deputy mayor in the 27-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, an election office spokesman said here after counting. Moudgil will be the 22nd mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
3. Moudgil bagged 22 votes as against his Congress rival Davinder Singh Babla who got five votes. Dhillon got 21 votes as against Congress rival Sheela Phool Singh who got six votes. Aggarwal got 22 votes as against Congress candidate Ravinder Kaur who got four votes, while one vote was declared invalid.
4. In the 27-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the strength of BJP councillors is 20, Congress four, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) one, Independent one and one vote is of sitting MP Kirron Kher of the BJP. The nine nominated councillors could not vote this year as their right to exercise franchise was struck down by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2017.

About Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Elections 2016

1. Campaigning would be allowed till 5 PM on December 17.

   There are 26 wards in Chandigarh in which the elections will be held. There are 5,07,190 voters in the city, out of whom 2,70,358 are male and 2,36,819 are female and 13 of them are third gender. There are about 460 polling booths.

2. All the 26 wards have been divided between seven returning officers before whom nominations will be submitted. The nominations will be filed between 11 am and 3 pm on all the working days.

3. A security of Rs 6,000 for each candidate will be deposited in cash with the returning officer at the time of filing nomination papers and Rs 3,000 in case of a Scheduled Caste candidate.

4. There will be three election observers and three election expenditure observers.

5. If a contesting candidate has to hold meetings, the party or the candidate will have to inform the local police authorities about the venue and time for any proposed meeting well in time. No mikes or speakers will be allowed after 10 pm. If a procession has to be taken out, the party or candidate will have to inform the police about it.
