Hill TMC sounds its poll bugle for Darjeeling municipality election, Darjeeling Municipal Corporation Election Schedule Date 2016, Darjeeling local body election updates news

With an eye on the upcoming municipality election, the hill Trinamool Congress today virtually sounded its poll bugle by tearing into the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha at a public meeting in Darjeeling. Senior party leaders were in sync in alleging rampant corruption within the GJM-run local civic board and its failure to work for the welfare of the people, in spite of having a popular mandate.

Speaking from the Sumeroo Manch, hll TMC spokesperson N.B. Khawas termed the incumbent civic board the most corrupt and a failure. “I have seen many boards, but not like this (GJM led) one.

Darjeeling Municipality Corporation Election Schedule Date 2016 - November 2016 (Tentative Date )

There is rampant corruption and nepotism. It is a failed board where good governance is only a distant dream,” he said.

The TMC spokesperson said his party would file a RTI (right to information) to ascertain how the funds for various schemes supposed to benefit the people were being utilised by the GJM-run municipality.

“We will file an RTI to know how this municipality is using funds for the solid waste management project and those of the UBS. The municipality chairman should provide us a reply within a month. Failure to  do so will prove there is indeed corruption,” Khawas said.

The TMC has been highlighting the GJM’s inability to address issues like checking and banning construction of huge structures in the frail town area, pointing to last month's building collapse in town where several people lost their lives, solving drinking water problems, keeping the town area clean and green, and above all proper utilisation of development schemes.

“The bane of this civic body is the policy of selection over election it has adopted. But this will change if the people give us a chance as our party has vision and a mission. We stand for development and are the voice of the poor and downtrodden,” Khawas said, in obvious reference to the upcoming municipal election that is expected to be held in November.
