WITH AN eye on the Assembly polls next year, the state BJP on Friday appointed new presidents for 20 key districts in the state.

The announcement was made as soon as the newly appointed BJP president, Dilip Ghosh, returned to Kolkata after a meeting with party national president Amit Shah in New Delhi. Sources said while the new chief has been given a free hand, Ghosh — a RSS pracharak for the last three decades — will also receive full support from the Sangh.

The meeting between Ghosh and Shah was also attended by former BJP state president Rahul Sinha and other senior leaders.

Later, through a statement, the BJP announced the appointment of 20 presidents in the districts of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, Kolkata North West, Kolkata South, Kolkata South Sub, South 24 Parganas East and West, Howrah Rural, Hooghly, Midnapore Purbo and Paschim, Bankura, Purulia, Asansol, Burdwan and Birbhum.

Ghosh’s appointment as the new party president also saw an end to the alleged tussle between RSS and the state BJP. While the RSS allegedly wanted Sinha to be replaced, particularly because of “unruly CPM cadres joining the party”, BJP found it difficult to find a suitable replacement.

“Immediately after Ghosh became the new president, the change was evident. Not only did the RSS put its full strength in the party’s law violation rallies, three top leaders from Delhi — national general secretary and state observer Kailash Vijayvargiya, and national secretaries Sidharth Nath Singh and Suresh Pujari — also took part in the protests,” said the leader.
