About the Constituency:

As part of the Darbhanga district in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, Darbhanga is one of the forty parliamentary constituencies which belong to this state. According to Election Commission of India 2009 data the total electorates in the Darbhanga Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 14) were 1,307,067 of which 601,794 are females and 705,273 are males.

About Darbhanga:

With the city of Darbhanga as its administrative headquarters, the Darbhanga district is one of the most renowned regions in Bihar, as it houses a number of varied communities of the state, mostly the minority sections of the society. Although agriculture is the main occupation in this region, this district of Darbhanga has been identified as one of the 250 districts in the country to be economically underdeveloped. Thus Darbhanga receives aid under special governmental schemes such as the Backward Region Grant Fund Programme.

Political Background:

The seat of Darbhanga has alternated between the BJP and the RJD since the general polls of 1998, before which the seat was in the hands of the Janata Dal for a number of decades. Six assembly constituencies comprise the Lok Sabha constituency of Darbhanga.

About Barasat:

The Barasat Parliamentary Constituency is one of West Bengal's 42 Lok Sabha constituencies which came into being in 1957 and has 1,226,654 voters. The Barasat Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 17) consists of 1,226,654 number of electorates in totality, of these 640,075 are males and 586,579 are females as the Election commission of India 2009 data suggests. It comprises of seven legislative assembly segments.

 About Barasat:

Barasat is the district headquarters of the North 24 Parganas and it has a total area of over 12 sq km. The Sealdah Station is located 22 km from here and the River Ganges is 15 km away.

As per the 2011 census data, the total population residing in the town of Barasat is over 283,400 of which 143,732 are males and 139,711 are females. About 17% of the population is under the age of six and the sex ratio is 972 females per 1000 males. The population density is roughly over 2,200 people per sq km. With an average literacy rate of 90.42%, the male and female literacy rates are 93.14% and 87.62% respectively. Bengali is the official language here while English is also widely spoken in the area. Many schools, both public and private, are located here as well several colleges. Trade of rice, potatoes, cotton and coconuts play a vital part of the economic setup of the city. The National Highways NH-34 and NH-35 pass through the district.

About Bardhaman- Durgapur:

One of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal, Bardhaman Durgapur was formed after the 2008 delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. The total number of electorates in the Bardhaman Durgapur Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 39) according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports are 1,353,380 of which 709,424 are males and 643,956 are females. It comprises of six Vidhan Sabha segments of which two are reserved for the SC category. The constituency represents the Burdwan District which is at an average elevation of 30 m and covers an area of 56 sq km.

Its headquarters are situated in the city of Burdwan and is about 100 km away from the city of Kolkata. It has always been an important city in history and has cultural and economic importance.

As per 2011 India census, the total population of the Urban Agglomeration of Bardhaman is over 347,000 with a 53% male majority. Over 25,000 of the population are under the age of six and the average literacy rate is 89%. The city has an 84% Hindu majority and the city is famous is home to the Hindu Goddess, Kankeleswari Kali. There are several schools and colleges located here including the prestigious St. Xaviers School. The economy is mostly agrarian and rice cultivation being the primary activity and the city is nicknamed to be the "Rice Bowl" of the state. The National Highway NH-2 passes through the district.

One of the 42 parliamentary constituencies of West Bengal, Bardhaman Purba came into existence in the year 1951. 1,289,311 is the total electorate count in the Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 38). Out of these 674,311 number of electorates are males and the remaining 615,000 are belong to the female category as the Election commission of India 2009 reports suggest. It is reserved for the SC category and comprises of six Vidhan Sabha segments. The constituency represents the Burdwan District which is at a height of 30 m over an area of 56 sq km and its headquarters are situated in the city of Burdwan.

One of the 42 parliamentary constituencies of the state of West Bengal, Barrackpur (or Barrackpore) is a city in the North 24 Parganas district of the State. According to Election Commission of India 2009 data the total electorates in the Barrackpur Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 15) were 1,081,237 of which 488,163 are females and 593,074 are males. It was formed prior to the elections of the year 1951 and comprises of seven segments.

 About Barrackpore:

The city of Barrackpore lies on the eastern bank of the river Ganga. It is located about 24 kms from Kolkata and is located in the Ganges-Brahamaputra delta region of the state. It stands at an elevation of 15 m and covers an area of over 25 sq km.

The city has a population of over 150,000 with around 8% of the population under the age of six. About 53% of the population is male and the sex ratio is 886 females for every 1000 males. The average literacy rate of Barrackpore is 81% and the city is considered to be an important military center and is home to the oldest cantonment in India and Police Training academy in West Bengal. Barrackpore has always been the center for small scale cottage and handicrafts. Primary industries in the area are of jute and agriculture. This city is also famous for the oldest water treatment plant. National Highways NH-34 and NH-35, and some major State Highways connect the city to several major towns and cities.
