Prime Minister Narendra Modi will induct 19 new faces into his council of ministers with many of them from states where elections are due next year.

The Prime Minister is likely to keep regional balances especially in view of the upcoming elections in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab.

Tuesday's cabinet expansion and reshuffle would invariable bear the stamp of 'social engineering' to accommodate disparate social groups – like the Dalits, Kurmis etc –  particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, states that are poll-bound in January 2017.

LIVE UPDATES CABINET RESHUFFLE

1. 19 new ministers of state swearing-in ceremony concludes. Only one minister Prakash Javadekar has been elevated in Modi government. 
2. Whether portfolios will change hands with induction of 19 new faces, remains to be seen.

8. Ajay Tamta, Lok Sabha MP from Uttarakhand, takes oath as minister.
9. Mahendra Nath Pandey takes oath. He is a Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, where elections are due next year.
10. Jaswantsinh Bhabhor, MP from Gujarat, takes oath.
11.  Arjun Ram Meghwal, MP from Rajasthan, takes oath.

12. MJ Akbar, MP from Madhya Pradesh, takes oath.
13. Parshottam Rupala, BJP MP from Gujarat, takes oath.
14. Anil Madhav Dave, BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh, takes oath.
15. Rajen Gohain, BJP MP from Assam, takes oath.

Highlights of Cabinet Reshuffle 2016:

1. Modi had first expanded his cabinet in November 2014 when he had inducted 21 new faces in his council of ministers, including defence minister Manohar Parrikar, health minister J.P. Nadda and railway minister Suresh Prabhu. At present, there are 64 Union ministers, including Modi.
2. For the first time in 20 years, there will be 13 ministers from Uttar Pradesh in the Cabinet. 
3. All of them are from the BJP barring Ramdas Athavale and Anupriya Patel.
4. The list also reveals a careful balance of caste, social and regional considerations. Two leaders - Jaswantsinh Bhabhor (BJP) and Faggan Singh Kulaste (BJP) - belong to Scheduled Tribes and five to Scheduled Castes -- Ajay Tamta (BJP), Ramdas Athalwale (RPI), Arjun Ram Meghwal (BJP), Ramesh Jigajinagi (BJP) and Krishna Raj (BJP).

5. There are two minority leaders - MJ Akbar and SS Ahluwalia (BJP) - and two women -- Anupriya Singh Patel (Apna Dal) and Krishna Raj.
6. The ministers come from 10 states - Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Assam.

7. The last cabinet expansion had taken place in November 2014.
