New Delhi: The Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) has decided to forge ties with other like-minded parties to oppose the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—just as it did successfully with the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar—for upcoming assembly elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh and Assam.
The JD(U)’s leadership is meeting in New Delhi for the first time after its stunning victory in the Bihar assembly polls. On day one of the national executive meeting, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, JD(U) national president Sharad Yadav and legislators discussed the party’s strategy to expand its base.
“We have decided to bring all political parties together to fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party. The national executive committee has given Kumar and Yadav the duty to talk to leaders of opposition in poll-bound states about the same,” said JD(U) spokesman K.C. Tyagi.
Tyagi said that the JD(U) will request the Congress, Asom Gana Parishad and United Democratic Front (in Kerala) to forge an alliance with the party in order to defeat the BJP.
“We will fight elections in the five poll-bound states using the Bihar formula. We will try our best in Assam as that is the only state where the BJP has higher chances of winning,” he said.
Assam, West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are slated to go to the polls in 2016, while the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections will be held in 2017.
