Candidate nominations for assembly polls begins on Wednesday

New Delhi: Filing of nomination papers for coming Delhi Assembly elections will begin on Wednesday.

Candidates of different political parties can file their nominations from tomorrow for the poll which is scheduled to held on February 7.

With the declaration of poll dates, Election Commission today launched a crackdown on illegal hoardings and banners put up by political parties in all 9 districts.

In South district, 603 hoardings and 55 banners of political parties were removed under the Delhi Prevention Defacement of Property Act 2007.

1063 boardings, posters and banners were removed from different areas in north Delhi.

"Video viewing teams, Flying Squad Teams, Static Surveillance Teams have been deployed to check the cases of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation," District Election Officer (north) Madhu Tevtia said in a statement.

To make the voters aware, a Facebook page has been created by the DEO and fist-level of checking Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is going on, Madhu also said.

The last date for filing nominations is January 21. The date of scrutiny is January 22, while candidates can withdraw from the electoral battle by January 24.

Counting of votes for the election to the 70-member Assembly will be held on February 10, ahead of the expiry President's Rule which was imposed in the national capital on February 15 last year.

The polls is being touted as a direct contest between BJP and AAP.

The exercise to elect MLAs for 70 constituencies in Delhi will be held at 11,763 polling booths across 2,527 locations in the city.

As per the electoral roll published till January 5, the total number of voters in the city is estimated to be at 1,30,85,251 of which 72,60,633 are men and 58,24,618 are women voters.
