New Delhi: The Muffler Man campaign on social media, which was started by volunteers of the Aam Aadmi Party, has turned out to be a fund-raiser of sorts, with the party witnessing a rise in donations ahead of the Delhi assembly elections.

The campaign, inspired by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal who was often seen with a muffler during campaigning last year and while he was the Delhi Chief Minister for 49 days, took the social media by storm and has been trending on Twitter for the past eleven days.

In a trend similar to the ice bucket challenge, Wednesday saw Twitter abuzz with AAP supporters re-tweeting tweets where one or the other promised to donate money and time to the party for every re-tweet. Also Read: Delhi  candidate List,  Delhi Election Schedule Delhi Opinion poll

By 9.30pm on Wednesday, more than 3,100 people had taken up the challenge and about Rs 10 lakh had already been pledged to the party. The word Muffler Man was used 3 lakh times on Twitter in three days. The purpose is to take the campaign to the people and we are succeeding in it," the volunteer said.

"The initiative was taken up by a supporter around 4pm on Tuesday and by that night, about 50 people had joined in. However, on Wednesday more than 3,000 people joined the challenge. On an average, each tweet was re-tweeted about 100 times which led to about 30,000 tweets. More than Rs 10 lakh had been committed to the party by Wednesday night and the money will start coming in by Thursday," said Arvind Jha, a volunteer with AAP's technology and social media team.

"There were also those, including students, who might not have had money but donated an hour or so for every time their tweets were re-tweeted. Political parties have a massive budget for this kind of outreach on the social media where AAP is actually earning. We are extremely grateful to our supporters for this fabulous initiative," Jha added.

  1. A tweet was first reportedly put out by party supporter Nishant Beria on Tuesday, saying: "I will Donate Rs 2 to AAP for Every RT this Tweet gets in next 24 hrs (sic)." While this was re-tweeted 514 time till Wednesday night, others who picked this up started nominating friends to carry on the trend.
  2. Singer, composer Vishal Dadlani, a party supporter, pledged Rs 50 for each time his tweet was re-tweeted. Till 9.30pm, his tweet, made at 10.17am on Wednesday, had been re-tweeted 2,642 times. V Balakrishnan, former member of the Infosys board of directors and an AAP member, pledged Rs 100 for each re-tweet, of which he had 1,083 till Wednesday night.
  3. While some pledged Rs 100 for re-tweets, others promised anything from Re 1 to Rs 10 for re-tweets. Many also laid down a time limit, starting with 24 hours up to December 15.
  4. Pawan Sharma tweeted: "I wl donate Rs2 pr RT of this twt in 24Hr" (sic) while Anjali offered Rs 500 for each new follower: "I will donate 500 Rs each new follower." (sic)
