Delhi elections may have over 1.5 lakh new voters this time

More than 1.7 lakh new voters are likely to be added to the electoral rolls of Delhi by the time the state goes to polls next year. The Delhi electoral office is carrying out the summary revision of the electoral rolls and has received 1,71,763 applications in ‘Form 6’ from residents who want to be enrolled as voters.

Apart from the forms for enrollment, the electoral office has also received applications for change of addresses and deletion of names from electoral rolls since it started the exercise on October 15. The applications have been scrutinised and the final number of new voters would be published on January 5, 2015.

The electoral office had given time till November 10 for residents turning 18 on January 1, 2015 to register themselves. November 10 was also the deadline for residents who wanted to make corrections in the electoral rolls. The Election Commission of India had decided to take up revision of electoral rolls with reference to January 1, 2015 as the cut-off date.

The Delhi Electoral Office carried out the special summary revision according to guidelines set by the commission. The electoral office had prepared a draft revised electoral roll, which was made public so that voters can check their names and other details.

“During elections, we get a lot of complaints from people about their names missing from electoral rolls or mistake in the spelling of their names or addresses etc. Summary revision gives them the chance to correct such details in the roll during the special campaign,” said an electoral officer.

The electoral office has been scrutinizing the applications and has disposed of all claims and objections. The final revised electoral roll would be published on January 5. Those who have not enrolled for the electoral roll, however, can still apply by filling up Form 6. “There will be a special campaign again,” the official said.
