Assembly Election 2014: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal sounds poll bugle in Delhi, promises 800,000 jobs, WiFi
New Delhi: Ahead of the Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) national convenor and chief ministerial candidate Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday sounded the poll bugle by describing his party as brave, honest and one which stick to its commitments. He also announced a host of measures to appeal to various segments of voters in Delhi.
Addressing a public meeting at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, Kejriwal said, “If you ask anyone they'll tell you three things about AAP, one is that we are honest. Second is, we do what we say (Jo kaha so kia), and the third is, We (AAP) are brave.”
"We have governed for 49 days and we did what we said," Kejriwal said while reminding the steps that his party had taken for the welfare of people, when they were in power for 49 days.
"We promised audit on power companies in Delhi and gave orders for audit within a week of coming to power," the AAP leader added.
He further said, "We gave 20,000 liters of water for free to the people of Delhi," .
As part of his 'Delhi Dialogue' initiative, Kejriwal also announced that, if elected, the AAP would create eight lakh jobs and train 10 lakh youth in the next five years.
"The youth of Delhi has immense talent, but they still don't get admissions in colleges. We will establish 20 new colleges in the city to ensure that every student gets admission in a college after passing Class 12.. It is possible, we have done all calculations," said Kejriwal.
Kejriwal also announced a loan scheme for students passing out from Delhi's schools and wanting to pursue diploma or degree courses. He said no student would be denied a loan.
The AAP convener also promised to better the sports infrastructure by building stadia in the city.
"I had gone to a village (in Delhi) where there was no stadium. The villagers said they had land but no stadium. I asked them to give us land so that it can be turned into stadia," he said.
Kejriwal further said all sports grounds in government schools would be opened to budding sportspersons for training.
The former Delhi chief minister also promised that November 26, which is the foundation day of AAP, will be celebrated as Women Safety Day and e-rickshaws will be able to ply on the roads again.
He also said the AAP would make Delhi a drug-free city. "Whatever we promised before coming to power, we fulfilled them in just 49 days. And whatever promises we have made today, we will fulfill them also," Kejriwal said.
Meanwhile, AAP leader Ashutosh had yesterday confirmed that the former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will not change his seat and will again contest the upcoming polls from the New Delhi assembly constituency.
The party had made a dream debut in Assembly polls in December last year by winning 28 seats in the 70-member assembly. Later, it had formed government in Delhi with the outside support of Congress.
However, Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government resigned on February 14, after the party's pet project, the Janlokpal Bill, could not be passed due to opposition from BJP and Congress.
Thereafter, the Delhi Assembly was dissolved on November 4, by President Pranab Mukherjee following recommendation by the Union Cabinet. As per reports, fresh polls are likely to be held in the state in February 2015.
