BJP welcomes Digvijay Singh’s comment on Narendra Modi:
NEW DELHI: BJP on Friday welcomed senior Congress leader and Narendra Modi baiter Digvijay Singh saying the Gujarat chief minister was moving away from his "fanatic" ideology and that "even a chaiwala can become the prime minister", but said it was only a change in perception of those who had never watched him keenly.
BJP leader Smriti Irani said, "We had not thought that Digvijay Singh will say that even a chaiwala can become prime minister... I am happy that Modiji is being praised so much by Digvijay Singhji."
Asked if BJP accepted that Modi was moderating himself for the national audience, party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said, "Modi has been on the development path for long and he has delivered in Gujarat and the people of that state know it.
But the change that is being talked about in Modi's image is at the level of perception of those who have not watched him in detail, since he was not visible outside of Gujarat."
She added, "Modi has only once talked about his OBC background while reacting to the chaiwala comment. That apart, he has not once spoken of any sort of divide among people, religious or to do with caste. He talks of citizenry, their rights, their privileges and reaches out without any discrimination, without going into identity politics."
Digvijay Singh had said on Thursday that he "welcomes that Modi is gradually distancing from his fanatic ideology and gravitating towards the ideology of Atal Bihari Vajpayee" and "it should be welcomed if Sangh and the BJP... are coming close to the ideology of Congress and (Jawaharlal) Nehru".
He, however, added that "Modi will not be acceptable to people of India" and he would prefer Sushma Swaraj "if god forbid BJP comes to power".
