Samajwadi Party to Contest All 70 Delhi Assembly Seats.
Samajwadi Party today said it will field candidates for all 70 seats in the December 4 Delhi assembly polls. Announcing the decision, SP's Delhi chief Usha Yadav said the party will release the list of candidates after November 9, the date of filing nominations.
"The party will project itself as an alternative to Congress and BJP. We have finalised a list of candidates for all 70 seats and will announce their names in a couple of days," Yadav told reporters here.
"As far as selection of candidates is concerned, we have tried to give adequate representation to women and youths. We are confident of increasing our vote share to 6 per cent and get the party registered in Delhi," she said.
Unveiling the party's poll strategy, Yadav said an 18-member committee has been formed for election campaign. SP would organise rallies in the coming weeks where party's chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, among others, will be the star campaigners, she said.
"Our workers are putting in all their efforts in the election campaigning. We are working on the strategy of 'one booth, ten youths' to reach out to the grass-root level," she said.
The SP leader said only those with clean image andacceptability among the people have been given party tickets. "Those who have been working for the party for a long time have been given preference," she said.
The party will release its manifesto after candidates file their nominations, she said. Yadav said the focus would be on providing small loans to unemployed youth so that they can start their own business.
"We have strong support from areas (of Delhi) where residents of Uttar Pradesh stay. Besides that, we have support from the Muslim community. But this does not mean that Delhi residents do not like us," Yadav said.
SP is confident of better prospects in the Delhi polls. "There is a huge difference between last year's municipal elections and assembly polls. We are not very ambitious, but hope to win few seats," she said.
"In last year's Delhi Municipal Corporation Election, SP fielded candidates on 128 seats, out of which 107 contested. We won two municipal seats and our vote share was 2.96 per cent," she said.
The vote share of SP in the last assembly election was 0.48 per cent and it had contested 36 seats. Yadav did not specify the names of constituencies where the party is hoping to win.
Accusing Congress and BJP of failing to solve the city's problems, Yadav said even during the festival season, Delhi wore a deserted look due to rising prices of commodities and bad sanitation.
"Both parties have completely lost the trust of the people. There are several issues pervading Delhi at present - be it inflation, cleanliness or infrastructure, but they have failed in solving the city's problems," she said.
Yadav said SP does not consider Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a contender. "Their fight is with Congress and BJP in the election. They have influence in urban areas. AAP is like a bubble which will burst after the election results are announced. We do not see them as a competitor," she said.
With Bahujan Samajwadi Party and Nationalist Congress Party also fielding candidates from all 70 seats, SP said the upcoming elections would be one of the most closely contested polls in the recent times.
"BSP has its own vote bank and those do not go to any other party. We are not worried about them," she said.
