Tussle for tickets in BJP delays list of party candidates for polls.
Faced with an intense tussle for tickets among the hopefuls, the BJP is finding it difficult to finalise its list of candidates for the Assembly polls.
Earlier, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and BJP's former national president and Delhi election in-charge Nitin Gadkari had announced that the party would declare the list of candidates on October 31. But it is unlikely to keep that promise.
Harsh Vardhan, the party's chief ministerial candidate, said that the party's state election committee, which will draw up the preliminary list, was yet to meet. Then, the list has to be finalised by the central election committee of the party, of which Harsh Vardhan is a member. So, the list is unlikely to be announced before Diwali.

For the 70 Assembly seats in the capital, nearly 1,500 hopefuls are jockeying for tickets. "The list is likely to be delayed. We are planning to convene the meeting soon, maybe tomorrow (Thursday). For 70 seats, we still have 1,500 candidates and we need to shortlist the names first," Harsh Vardhan said.
The delay has caused the party's central leadership embarrasment as both Sushma and Gadkari had announced that the list would be out on October 31. The party's central election committee is meeting on Thursday and ticket-hopefuls were expecting that the list would be declared then.
But sources said the central leadership would meet to discuss other issues and that the party's state election committee would have to meet first and reach a consensus over the probable candidates.
"The state election committee was scheduled to meet on Wednesday but could not. The possibility of the committee drawing up the list of candidates on Thursday also looks remote as Gadkari too is required to put his stamp of approval on the list.
And with an intense tussle raging over tickets, the party is now in a fix as to when to announce the list of candidates," a senior party leader and member of the state election committee said.
