Delhi assembly election 2013: Internal strife within BJP over CM nominee.
As tension simmers within, together in a show of unity after 48 hours of behind the scene tug-of-war with party in charge of Delhi election Nitin Gadkari pushing for the anointment of Goel's bete noire Harshvardhan as chief ministerial candidate.
Gadkari broached the issue of nominating Harshvardhan with LK Advani in a meeting last Monday evening. While Harshvardhan enjoys the support of BJP parliamentary board members including Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, party president Rajnath Singh is opposed to his nomination.
The national president of the party even intervened after reports of Harshvardhan's elevation were leaked so much so that he postponed his trip to Hyderabad on Tuesday and stayed put in Delhi as Goel got into damage control mode. The decision it seems has been put in abeyance for the time being. But Goel has already hit the campaign trail.
Though he underplays differences within the party, hundreds of his supporters gathered outside the party office seeking elections be contested under collective leadership. Goel's not-so-subtle indications about his popularity and show of strength outside the party office has put the BJP in a very tough spot. "Everyone has a right to choice.
Some party members met me and told their preference that's all," said Gadkari. With AAP already trying to make a dent into BJP vote bank in the state, divisions within will not help the party desperately trying to wrest the power back after three consecutive defeats to Congress leader and Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit.
