Abbi Wins Mayoral Election |
New Delhi, April 21, 2011 The Capital once again got a woman mayor with BJP councillor Rajni Abbi’s election to the post on Wednesday. Abbi, a first-time councillor, defeated her rival Congress leader Savita Sharma by 88 votes. Soon after results were declared, the beaming or said she would protest against the imp ending split of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). She said the division is absolutely against the interests, growth and development of the people of Delhi. Abbi said as mayor her top priority will be to maintain the cleanliness of the city and implement green initiatives as they are the need of the hour. Abbi’s election, however, was clouded in controversy as the opposition Congress alleged that she will be holding an “office of profit” as a Mayor since she is also working as a teacher in the Law Faculty of Delhi University. Leader of Opposition Jai Kishan Sharma said as per Delhi Municipal Act, her nomination should be rejected outrightly and sought reply from Municipal Commissioner KS Mehra on the matter. Abbi, however, said that she is not breaking any law as the mayor of Delhi receives no salary. “I have taken prior permission from DU to become a councillor. I teach law and I would never break it,” she said. Hindustan Times
