Delhi BJP declared their Candidates on Oct 7 for upcoming delhi poll 2013.
NEW DELHI: The Delhi BJP looks set to miss another deadline for declaring its first list of assembly poll candidates. The party had set a deadline of September 15 but revised it to October 7. Sources say the candidates for most seats have still not been finalized due to intense rivalry in the party.
The issue is likely to be discussed during October 8-10 in the presence of BJP's election incharge for Delhi, Nitin Gadkari , whose repeated absence is also contributing to the delay.
When it missed the original September deadline, the party had cited its preoccupation with the preparations for Narendra Modi's Vikas Rally. Although its Delhi unit president , Vijay Goel, told TOI that the list will be out in next 8-10 days, party sources said even that looks difficult.
"There are 5-6 claimants for each seat. Even if the party's core group for Delhi finalizes the list, it will not be released until the national election committee clears it. So far there is no date for the national committee's meeting," said a senior party leader . To get its campaign rolling, sources said, the party will unofficially inform the likely candidates-mostly sitting MLAs and a few other senior leaders-to work harder in their constituencies.
The failure of the party's plan to select candidates through secret ballot has also contributed to the delay. BJP had appointed 14 observers, two in each constituency, to shortlist three candidates in order of eligibility and drop their names in a box that was to be opened before Gadkari. Party officials are not sure of the fate of this scheme. "We are not sure when the boxes were opened, but at present there are more than three names for most of the seats," said a party leader.
"The information gathered through the secret ballot process will play a vital role in finalizing the names. However, that will not be the sole criteria," said Vijay Goel.
