Am non-political, don’t want to be AAP’s CM candidate: Kiran Bedi.

Three days after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) offered a ticket to Kiran Bedi and even offered to make the former IPS officer their chief ministerial candidate, she has expressed her unwillingness to join the party.

“I treat all such suggestions and offers with respect and gratitude. I also understand fully the possible reasons of their requests. But I am unable to accept them as I am by nature a non-political person,” Bedi, who was in the USA, told Firstpost in an email interview.

On Sunday, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal had said that his party members would like Kiran Bedi to join them and be their chief ministerial candidate in New Delhi.

Bedi and Kejriwal worked closely during the Jan Lokpal movement from which the AAP was carved out late last year. While Kejriwal took the political plunge, Bedi and Maharashtra-based social activist Anna Hazare, decided to remain apolitical.

Soon after the formation of the AAP, the duo announced that they will continue working for anti-corruption legislation under the ‘India Against Corruption’ (IAC) banner. The IAC even opened an office in New Delhi, but was dismantled within 6 months due to internal differences.

Kejriwal has been in touch with both Bedi and Hazare and has tried to persuade them to join the AAP on more than one occasion.

“She is like my elder sister. Last year, I had repeatedly asked her to join AAP, but she refused saying she doesn’t want to join politics,” Kejriwal said on Sunday.

The AAP’s latest attempt to woo Bedi was triggered by news reports suggesting that the BJP has offered her a ticket asking her to contest against Kejriwal.

“We have no evidence or report suggesting that she approached the BJP for a ticket or asked the party to make her its chief ministerial candidate. We think that the party floated her name. But in case she decides to enter politics at all, then she might as well join the AAP as she would feel home here. She is not an outsider,” said psephologist and AAP leader Yogendra Yadav.

So far, Kejriwal is presumed to be the AAP’s CM candidate for the Delhi elections and will contest from New Delhi assembly seat against chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Kejriwal has already declared that if Dikshit decides to contest from another seat, he will fight from there. And according to Kejriwal’s supporters that is why his offer to Kiran Bedi is just him showing his generosity.

“It was a humility on his (Kejriwal’s) part to tell Kiran Bedi that she would be the CM candidate if she joins the party,” said Yadav.

However, Bedi ruled out joining politics at all.

“I am a public servant at heart or else I would not have joined Indian Police service and run two non profit organisations which reach out to thousands of poor daily. I hope to continue being of value in my own way, the way I have been doing so far,” she said.
