The newly floated Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) today published its first list of candidates for the 2016 Assembly election in Assam.

LDP is the first political party to announce a list of candidates for the polls.

Kali Barua for Mahmora constituency & Kiran Ban Deori for the Dhemaji constituency

The party, floated by former BJP leader Pradyut Bora, announced candidates for two constituencies. "We have chosen Kali Barua for Mahmora constituency and Kiran Ban Deori for the Dhemaji constituency," said Shantikam Hazarika, chairman of the election committee of the party. Both the constituencies are in Upper Assam.

Hazarika said Barua was a successful woman entrepreneur and a prominent social worker while Deori is a former student leader and social worker, who led the joint protest by 32 organisations, against the construction of the Lower Subansiri project.

He said the party was strengthening its organisational base in several districts and will field candidates in 25 to 30 constituencies. The party is at present concentrating mainly on the Upper Assam districts.

Hazarika said they were trying to introduce a healthy political atmosphere by giving candidature through a clean process. He said it was quite exceptional at a time when other parties are suffering from infighting triggered by aspiring candidates.

He said by publishing the names list early they were giving the candidates an opportunity to work more earnestly among the people.

"At present, we are not in a position to tell in how many constituencies we will be able to win. But we are hopeful that people will support us. We are a new party. So our priority is to strengthen our organisational base," he said.
