NEW DELHI, Dec 3 - Putting at rest all speculations over its alleged hobnobbing with the AIUDF, the BJP has ruled out the possibility of having any alliance with the Badruddin Ajmal-led party.
Briefing newsmen after a meeting of the BJP election management committee late last evening, convenor of the forum, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP will neither have a pre-poll alliance nor a post-poll truck with the AIUDF. The BJP, however, is open to forging an alliance with any party other than the Congress and AIUDF, he said.
The BJP’s decision to distance itself from the AIUDF has more to do with the repeated allegations levelled by the Congress that the saffron party is having a tacit understanding the AIUDF. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had first alleged that the AIUDF was talking to both Congress and the BJP. His charge was backed by State Congress president Anjan Dutta, who alleged that the BJP has made payments to the AIUDF with an eye on the ensuing polls.
The BJP sources said that they would first have dialogue with smaller regional parties and try to form a pre-poll alliance with them to corner the Congress.
Last night’s meeting, held at State party president and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s residence, was attended by all the members of the party’s election management committee. It was also joined by the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, who is also the election in-charge for Assam, general secretary Ram Madhav and Ram Lal, among others.
Meanwhile, BJP’s national spokesperson for the Northeast, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, told this newspaper that the meeting was preliminary in nature, where the leaders discussed various strategies. “We had a preliminary discussion in which the leaders expressed their opinions,” he said.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, meanwhile, said that the party’s selection process would start in mid-December and the final list of candidates is expected to be finalised by February.
The meeting also discussed about the Prime Minister’s election campaign schedule. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister for Transport Nitin Gadkari would also be roped in for the poll campaign, he said.
Asked when the party would declare its chief ministerial candidate, Sarma replied that the BJP’s Parliamentary Board would take a final call on the issue.
The next meeting of the party’s poll management committee would be held after 15 days, he informed.
Meanwhile, with the central leaders getting down to business, ticket aspirants have started landing in the national capital. Aspirants of both the BJP and the Congress have started visiting their respective senior party leaders with their bio-data.
