The BJP will soon announce its chief ministerial candidate for Assam Assembly elections, BJP national general secretary Ram Madhab said here today.

He also charged Assam CM Tarun Gogoi of playing divisive politics with an eye on next year's Assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Madhab said, "The chief ministerial candidate will be announced very soon."

He, however, refused to name any prospective candidate at the moment.

On possibility of alliance with any party, he said talks are held with several parties during election time but refused to give any details.

Launching an attack on Mr Gogoi, the BJP national leader said, "Now when the elections are round the corner, Gogoi is trying to divide the people along lines of language and region."

He was referring to Gogoi's remark that Hindi-speaking people are controlling the Assam BJP unit.

Mr Madhab further said, "In 15 years of Congress rule, there were no roads, power, employment. Assam has scored low in all human development indices. If Gogoi cannot govern, he should give us the chance."

"The Congress has been trying to encourage and increase infiltration and the BJP vehemently protests it," he added.

The BJP national general secretary claimed that the party has already kept several of its promises made before the Lok Sabha elections, like broad gauge rail services to Silchar, refuge for Bangladeshi Hindus and steps to seal porous Bangladesh borders.

"The BJP has been in power for one-and-half-years only. Give us some more time to meet all the assurances," he added.

Mr Madhab said the BJP will release a 'vision document' for Assam election soon, in place of a manifesto and a 10 member committee, headed by Kabindra Purkayastha, has been appointed to draft it.

Another 18 member committee will look after the election campaign in the state.

The vision document committee and election campaign committee are extensions of the core election management committee for the state, which is a 10 member body, headed by state BJP president and Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
