With the declaration of UP panchayat election schedule, the first stage of nominations of 6310 panchayat members completed in the state. In Agra, the election will be held for 131 members and 807 BDCs, for which nominations were filed on Monday and Tuesday.

However, despite being a Muslim dominated city, Agra does not figure in the two dozen seats where the Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has fielded its candidates as a litmus test before the UP Assembly elections to be held in 2017.

Talking to India Today on phone, Owaisi said that in Uttar Pradesh, AIMIM's UP President Shaukat Ali is responsible for handling the Panchayat elections with which the AIMIM is making its debut in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. The districts where AIMIM has fielded its candidates include Lucknow, Faizabad, Azamgarh, Gaunda, Sultanpur, Basti, Barabanki and Khalilabad.

Asked why the party has not fielded any candidates in the Agra division where there is a large Muslim population, he said that Agra division, including Agra and Firozabad districts was being saved for a bigger goal in the future.

Political analysts believe that these two dozen candidates fielded in UP Panchayat elections are only to assess the level of support Owaisi's Hyderabad based party enjoys among North India Muslims. The results of the current panchayat elections could become a litmus test for the party in order to decide upon a strategy for the UP assembly elections of 2017.

Among the 938 nominations filed in Agra, none of them belong to the AIMIM, but the way the party workers were active at the Agra collectorate during the filing of nominations, it was clear that this move was intended to project the party's tremendous support among Agra Muslims, before the SP and BSP supported candidates.

Agra District Magistrate and Electoral Officer Pankaj Kumar said that the administration was taking all steps to ensure that the model code of conduct was adhered to by all candidates and any violations of the law will be strictly dealth with.
