High voter turn out kickstarts the local bodies poll in UP
LUCKNOW: Like assembly elections, Lucknow voters posted an increased turnout in the local bodies elections as well. Thanks to a better voter awareness and a relatively better weather that the state election commission recorded a turnout of over 49 percent. This was four percent higher than what the state capital recorded in 2006 local bodies elections which were held in November when weather was much pleasant in comparison to the present.
The credit goes to the voters who turned up despite a hot and humid weather to cast their votes,'' said state election commissioner, Satish Kumar Agarwal. He said that the commission had placed in measures for better awareness amongst the voters who stood up to the expectations.
The election was, however, marred by incidents of violence, cases of missing names and EVMs developing snags. In Kharika, two groups clashed with each amidst reports of officials allegedly influencing voters to vote for one or the other candidate. The state election commission suspended four officials -- additional city magistrate Shankar Mukherjee, CO Alambagh Brijesh Kumar, SO PGI, Dheeraj Singh and sector magistrate Inamuddin. The commission also ordered a repollin in four polling booths -- 198, 198A, 199 and 199A where repollling will now be held on June 26.
A similar incident was reported from Gudamba as well. Here also officials allegedly turned a blind eye to the groups clashing with each other. The commission suspended station officer of Gudamba Ram Naresh. Agarwal said that the role of the circle officer Vishal Pandey is also being examined.
There were also reports of voters complaining of their names missing from the voters' list. BJP leader and MLA from Lucknow east, Kalraj Mishra was surprised to see his name missing from the list.
Agarwal, however, countered that the commission had been organising camps and asking the voters to get their names added. He said that the commission has been holding meeting with the leaders of the political parties seeking their help to apprise voters to get their status updated.
Incidents of change of polling booths also affected the electioneering to some extent. Meanwhile, the state election commission said that it was gearing up to hold local bodies elections in 17 other districts on Sunday. The commission said that it has taken all measures, including sealing of liquor shops, to ensure free and fair conduct of elections.
