Northeast News 26 Feb 2013: Continuing his sessions with state leaders, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Monday interacted with chief ministers, state unit chiefs and legislative party leaders from six northeastern states on strengthening the party ahead of the 2014 general elections.
“There were some common issues of the region… political situation in each state was discussed besides issues related to organisation,” Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters after the meeting that lasted two and a half hours. “The meeting will continue as some state leaders could not come,” Dwivedi said. Of the eight northeastern states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura – the Congress rules in the first five. Among the three states which went to polls in February, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma attended the meeting while leaders of Tripura and Nagaland could not come. The counting of the votes in the three states will be held Feb 28. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki also could not come but Congress state chief Mukut Mithi represented him. According to Dwivedi, Gandhi told the leaders that he will continue the dialogue with them. The meeting follows Gandhi’s interactive sessions with AICC office-bearers and state leaders over the past few weeks. The feedback is expected to help Gandhi finalise a team for the six more state polls this year and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi heads the party’s coordination panel for the 2014 polls. |
