In a crucial test of political strength, the Opposition BJP in Arunachal Pradesh has outsmarted the ruling Congress in the Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) bye-poll.

In the process, BJP candidate Kaling Doruk captured Ward No. 5 of Pasighat Municipality defeating his lone rival from Congress party, Geni Pertin, by more than 100 votes in the bye- election held on December 16 last.

The bye-poll was necessitated following the death of incumbent councillor of Congress, Atik Pertin, who was the Deputy Chief Councillor of PMC, on April 23 last.

Kaling Doruk had notched up 312 votes out of the total of 514 votes polled and was declared as new Councillor of Ward No. 5.

Counting of votes took place in the Siang Hall at Pasighat on Saturday in the presence of East Siang Deputy Commissioner cum District Election Officer Isha Khosla and Extra Assistant Commissioner cum Municipal Election Officer Oli Perme, among others.
