Aizawl: A day after the ruling Congress was humiliated in four major states, it is now looking up to Mizoram where counting of votes to decide the fate of 142 candidates for the 40-member Legislative Assembly has begun on Monday. 


As per the latest tends available at 10.30 am, the Congress is leading in seven seats and the MNF in one in Mizoram. 

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, seeking a fifth term, is leading in both Serchhip, his home turf, and Hrangturzo. Congress candidates are also leading in Tuivawl, Tawi, South Tuipui, Hachhek and Tuichawng. 

The Mizo National Front (MNF) nominee L. Thangmawia is leading in Lengteng seat where Forests Minister H. Rohluna of Congress is trailing. 

Congress candidate John Siamkunga has been declared elected from South Tuipui. He defeated his nearest rival J Lalchhuana of Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP). Siamkunga polled 4,878 votes and J. Lalchhuana of ZNP 3,278. 

The counting of votes in Mizoram comes a day after the results of the recently concluded assembly polls were declared in four states - Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh. 

After the stunning defeat in four states, the Congress is hoping that Mizoram will be a face saver for the party. 

The counting of votes began at 8.am under the watchful eyes of the Election Commission. Over 81 percent of a total 690,860 voters exercised their franchise November 25 to elect a new 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly.

The ruling Congress in the state has contested all the 40 seats as has Mizoram Democratic Alliance (MDA). MDA constituent Mizo National Front (MNF) has contested in 31, Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) in eight and Maraland Democratic Front (MDF) contested in one seat. 

Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) fielded candidates in 38 seats while BJP contested 17 seats. Others include 2 NCP candidates, one Jai Maha Bharhat Party and four independents. 

The ruling Congress in the state has contested all the 40 seats as has Mizoram Democratic Alliance (MDA). 

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla of Congress is in the reckoning from his home turf Serchhip and neighbouring Hrangturzo. The main opponent MNF leader and former chief minister Zoramthanga is contesting from Tuipui East seat. 

Elaborate security arrangements have been made at the counting centres in the eight districts. 

Director General of Election Commission of India Ashish Srivastava and a number of observers are in the state to supervise and oversee the process.
